German Darts Championship Finals Night Tips

TXODDS’ newest addition Karel Sedlacek again got us out of jail in the afternoon session. It was great to see Daryl Gurney winning against Joe Cullen too. James Punt is back again this evening, check out his German Darts Championship Finals Night preview and tips below.

Peter Wright vs. Michael van Gerwen

This will be their 92nd match and MVG has won 66. It is useful to look at the more recent matches as MVG’s vice like grip on the game has slipped and Wright has improved. Looking at all matches played since the start of 2020 Wright has won 6 of their 13 matches and has lost both of their matches in 2022, 1-6 and 0-6. Those last two heavy defeats in the Premier League are very fresh in both players’ memories and give the advantage to MVG.

Wright played well, after changing his darts early in the game, this afternoon, when beating Ratajski 6-4. It was a very close match, but Wright was able to get that one break to turn the match in his favour. Afterwards he said he was in a lot of pain from his gallstones and while it didn’t stop him playing well, it is a concern.

MVG Not Happy

Michael van Gerwen beat Martin Lukeman 6-4 and he was not happy with his performance. Lukeman only averaged 87 but he was never out of the game. In the old days, MVG would have won it 6-1 or 6-2, but he was made to sweat by a guy averaging 87.

Van Gerwen will have to put in a better performance if Wright can ignore the pain and forget those two recent defeats. It is hard to back MVG these days but with Wright in pain and having been thrashed twice this year by MVG, it is hard to be too optimistic for Wright. However, he is still playing at a high level.

MVG is the 1.83 favourite, Wright 2.00. Hopefully Snakebite can pull off the win, but this is a no bet for me.

Dimitri van den Bergh vs. Michael Smith

Smith hit his best ever euro tour average when thrashing Dave Chisnall 6-1 this afternoon. It was a 108.38 average with 60% on the doubles and five maximums. Unplayable. Clearly his UK Open loss at the weekend is not bringing his game down.

Dimitri overcame his dire H2H record with Ryan Searle to win 6-1, averaging 96.47. It was a good performance, but he may have to play a lot better if Smith keeps up his standard of play. Their H2H record is 4-3 to Smith but they have only met twice in the last two years, with one win each. They have met on the euro tour three times and Smith has won the lot.

Just as Dimitri overcame a bad record against Ryan Searle, he is going to have to buck the trend against Smith in Europe. We have backed Dimitri to win the tournament so hopefully he can join Wright in the semi-final.

Smith is the 1.80 favourite, Van den Bergh 2.30.

German Darts Championship Finals Night Tip: No bet

Daryl Gurney vs. Jonny Clayton

Staying with the theme of bucking trends, Jonny Clayton has never beaten Daryl Gurney before, with Superchin having a 3-0 record against the Welshman. However, their last match was back in 2018 and the other two in 2017. Those were Gurney’s golden years and before Clayton became an elite player.

Gurney overcame a bad H2H record against Joe Cullen, beating him 6-3 and averaging 94.9 and 50% on the doubles. He broke Cullen in the first leg and kept him at arm’s length for the rest of the match. It was a good performance, and he looks relaxed and enjoying returning to a favourite venue, even if both players were being put off by the whistlers. There are plenty of fans in Superchin shirts in the crowd and he may be the crowd favourite here.

Jonny Clayton beat Mensur Suljovic 6-4 in another good match, both players averaging around the 98 mark. Clayton was just that bit better on the doubles and Mensur didn’t take enough of his chances.

This a hard one to call. The H2H form is a bit stale but they are both playing well and very capable of winning. Hopefully we get a good game, and I can see it going, if not to a deciding leg, close to it.

German Darts Championship Finals Night Tip: 1 point over 9.5 legs @ 2.15 with Ladbrokes

Rob Cross vs. Karel Sedlacek

Sedlacek extended his winning run to 19 and he has been the one bright light in what has been a money pit betting wise. It was another well deserved win, averaging 96.3 and he was the better player after a bit of a slow start. There was little wrong with De Sousa’s play and Evil Charlie earned the win. This will be his second euro tour quarter final and he lost his first 6-5 to Max Hopp back in 2019.

This evening he faces Rob Cross, and a Rob Cross who has brought his A game, averaging 99 in both his first two matches. He hasn’t been a model of consistency in recent months so there is no guarantee that he keeps this level up.

These two have met four times and it is 2-2, so Cross will be forewarned that this is no push over, and Sedlacek will know that he can beat Cross. Three of their matches went to a deciding leg, the other a 6-3 win for Sedlacek.

Could Evil Charlie make it 20 wins in a row?

Cross is the 1.44 favourite, Sedlacek 3.00.
