German Darts Championship Saturday Evening Tips
James Punt took this morning off but he is back in action tonight. Some big guns will be making their tournament bows, including Premier League Night 5 winner Michael Van Gerwen. Check out James’ German Darts Championship Saturday evening session preview and tips below.
Jose de Sousa vs. Kim Huybrechts
The sixth meeting between these two players and De Sousa leads 4-1, with Huybrechts’ only win coming three years ago. De Sousa is not in great form, losing five of his last ten matches (and four of his last five), while Huybrechts has won seven of his last ten, including a not very impressive 6-3 win over Joe Murnan last night. Not impressive with the exception of his doubling, which was 100%, 6 from 6. If he gets his scoring going, then he could bash De Sousa up.
De Sousa’s 2022 average is 94.4, compared to 97.5 for 2021 and he is struggling. Huybrechts is winning more matches and his 2022 average is 94.3, so nothing between them except Huybrechts will be feeling more confident.
De Sousa is the 1.65 favourite, but the value looks to be with Huybrechts.

Michael Smith vs. Devon Petersen
Petersen got a bye into this second round, and he starts his defence of the title with a tough match vs. Michael Smith. Petersen has lost seven of his last ten matches, Smith has won seven of his last ten. Smith bounced back from losing the final of the UK Open by beating Gary Anderson and Jonny Clayton in the PL before losing the final to Van Gerwen. Ironically, he played much better in defeat than he did in the first wo matches where he averaged 90.
Petersen is beginning to show some good form, averaging a shade under 93 in 2022, up from 89.9 last year. Winning three of his last eight is hardly earth shattering, but it was only a few weeks ago when he lost eleven in a row, so it does represent an improvement. Will it be enough to live with Smith? Probably not.
Smith leads the H2H stats 6-1 and most were easy wins, including a 6-2 win last month. Expect something similar. Smith is the 1.28 favourite with Petersen 4.35. The odds look about right but why not a repeat of their recent match score.
German Darts Championship Saturday Tip: 0.5 point Smith to win 6-2 @ 5.50 with SpreadEx
Gabriel Clemens vs. Dave Chisnall
Chizzy was all business last night, averaging 99 in a 6-1 win over Bellmont. The 2013 German Darts Champion has won seven of his last ten and is averaging 96 in 2022.
Clemens on the other hand has lost six of his last ten matches and is averaging 89.6 in 2022. Chisnall won their only previous match 6-5 in 2019. It is hard to see Clemens getting that close this evening.
German Darts Championship Saturday Tip: 1 point Dave Chisnall to win -1.5 legs @ 1.80 with SpreadEx
Michael van Gerwen vs. Jose Justicia
Justicia overcame George Killington 6-4 last night despite averaging nearly four points less. He has won six of his last ten matches and averages 91.3 this year. That is unlikely to be enough against the heavy scoring of Van Gerwen who has won eight of his last ten matches and back-to-back Premier League mini tournaments. Justicia does have a good A game but we only get to see it rarely. He has had two ton plus averages in his last 13 matches, which is good by his standard.
This not a match without risk for MVG but it would be a big surprise if he went down to a relatively moderate opponent. MVG is the 1.10 favourite and this looks like a bit of mismatch unless Justicia finds that A game. No bet.
German Darts Championship Saturday Tip: No Bet
Peter Wright vs. Martin Schindler
Our number 1 selection for the title, Peter Wright, faces a home favourite in the diminutive shape of Martin Schindler. Schindy beat Wattimena 6-4 last night despite Wattimena averaging five points more. There was some good stuff played, not least a double bullseye finish. Schindler has a very poor H2H record with Wright, winning just one of eleven previous matches.
So long as Wright is feeling well, past form suggests he wins this. He has lost four of his last ten, however. That said of those last ten, six saw big ton plus averages, but he lost three matches despite ton plus averages.
Schindler’s A game could cause Wright problems but with that H2H record, Schindler may be beaten before the first dart is thrown.
Wright is the 1.25 favourite but this is a no bet match.
German Darts Championship Saturday Tip: No Bet
Jonny Clayton vs. Scott Waites
The Ferret’s little slump continues. He has lost four of his last seven matches and in his last three his average has been just 91.3, well short of his 2022 average of 96.3. He has beaten Waites in the two previous matches, but he will need to start upping his game.
Waites didn’t impress in his 6-3 win over Marko Kantele, averaging just 87, below his seasonal average of 89.8. Waites did well at the qualifying tournaments for these euro tour events, winning all five of his matches. However, the rest of his season has not gone well. He did reach the last 32 at the UK Open, but never averaged more than 87 across his four matches. He has won just one players championship match so far.
Clayton is playing with his B or even C game at the moment and that may well be enough, unless Waites improves his scoring. Clayton is the 1.29 favourite but that doesn’t make any appeal give his recent form, but does Waites make much appeal at 3.90? Another match which makes no appeal.
German Darts Championship Saturday Tip: No Bet
Callan Rydz vs. Mensur Suljovic
A bit of a clash of styles here, with the fast pace of Rydz having to cope with the more pedestrian game of the Austrian. Their H2H record suggests he hasn’t coped well in the past, losing four of their five matches. Rydz did win their last match, an easy 6-1 win at last year’s Players Championship finals. Rydz was in good form back then, but his most recent form is not so great. He has lost six of his last ten matches and there is just no consistency. He is blowing hot and cold and is hard to call as a result, but there is more cold than hot.
Mensur got a bye into this round so he hasn’t had a warm up match. He has won six of his last ten matches and is playing OK, but nothing special.
This looks like a bit of a coin toss and as such Mensur makes some appeal at 2.28, but both are just too inconsistent to be worth backing.
German Darts Championship Saturday Tip: No Bet
Chris Dobey vs. Karel Sedlacek
Evil Charlie now has a 17 match winning run after beating Adrian Lewis 6-2. He played well, averaging 94.4 and he is very much on a roll.
Dobey is a bit of a serial under achiever given how well he scores. He got elevated to seeded status and a win here gets him £3k towards making the finals at the end of the year. Dobey won their last match 6-2 but Sedlacek wasn’t on a run of 17 wins then.
Dobey is the 1.33 favourite with Sedlacek 3.50. Dobey is vastly more experienced on the Euro tour and was runner up in Denmark in 2019 but otherwise, he hasn’t made much impression on it. Sedlacek has only played in three and made the quarter final in ET3 in 2019, so he will take his chance if he gets it.
