Grand Slam Darts Final
Gerwyn Price vs. Peter Wright
The final will be played out between the world’s number one and two. Both players started the tournament looking very poor, both lost a group match, both struggled to win their respective second round matches, and it wasn’t until the quarter finals that they started to show their A games.
Peter Wright had to work hard to beat Fallon Sherrock, but he got his first ton plus average of the tournament, winning 16-13. It wasn’t totally convincing, but the job was done. This afternoon he looked in big trouble against Michael Smith, 8-12 down, but he found his best game, won eight legs in a row and ran out the 16-12 winner. It was a well-deserved win in the end.
Gerwyn Price took advantage of a slow start from Jonny Clayton in the quarter final and despite a rally from The Ferret, Price won 16-12 in the end. His win against James Wade this afternoon was much more straight forward. Wade finally put in one of his underwhelming performances and was never in the game, allowing Price to win 16-9 and average 102.5, his best performance of the competition.
Mentally, Peter Wright spent more energy getting his win over Smith and he has less time to recover and get himself re-set for the final.
Their overall H2H record is 18-8 to Wright, but he won 12 of their first 14. Since 2019 it is 6-6 but 6-3 to Price in televised matches in the same period.
Special event for price
It must be remembered that this event is special for Price. It was his first major and he successfully defended it in 2019. In the last four years he has played 24 Grand Slam matches and won 21. This is his tournament and he will be more than keen to get the trophy back. He played Peter Wright in the 2019 final and won it 16-6, averaging just under 108. Peter wright has reached two finals, losing both, the one to Price and 12-16 lost to MVG in 2017.
Price has played nine ranked major finals and won four, Wright has played eleven and won four, but he has won the last three he has played in.
It has the feel of a closer match than the 16-6 drubbing of 2019 but Price has to be fancied given his excellent tournament record. Half of the last ten finals have seen over 27.5 legs and 30% have finished 16-13. Something similar tonight?
