Monday Afternoon PDC World Championship Preview

It was a solid session for James Punt last night with two winners at 1.90 and 3.60. Let’s hope for more of the same today. His Monday Afternoon PDC World Championship tips are below.

Andrew Gilding vs. Robert Owen

Gilding’s great mid-season form has dropped off and he has lost five of his last ten matches. He can still turn it on, as he did when beating Ricky Evans in the first round of the Players Championship finals with a 100 average, but of his last ten, two have seen ton plus averages but six under 92. Since the start of October he has lost nine of his fifteen matches and three of his last four.

Goldfinger has not played here since 2017 and his World Cup record is played five won two. He has played 30 matches on TV and won 10. This season it is played six, won one. He is not great in front of the cameras.

Ally Pally Debut

Robert Owen rarely gets to play in TV events, and he is making his World Championship debut. He won his place by finishing second on the Challenge Tour, but he was a tour card holder for eight years, so he is not an unknown quantity. He has won six of his ten matches, all on the Challenge Tour.

Owen does get the occasional outing in Players Championship events and on one such occasion back in August, he beat Andrew Gilding 6-4 and averaged 97.5. They have met three times and Owen has won all three. Owen has only played ten TV matches in his career, but he did win six of them, five of them when he reached the semi-final of 2018 UK Open.

Andrew Gilding is the 1.33 favourite, and he would have been backable earlier in the year when he was one of the best players around for a month or two. Now, he is Andrew Gilding, journeyman pro and not a massively better player than Owen. Their H2H record says the Welshman has a chance.

Danny Jansen vs. Paolo Nebrida

Danny Jansen won a Players Championship title back in April and made a few appearances on the Euro tour, beating Luke Humphries in one match, but his recent form isn’t great. He has lost six of his last ten with six sub 90 averages.

Nebrida qualified via the Asian Championship where he beat Toru Suzuki in the semi-final and lost to Christian Perez in the final. Both of those players have already been knocked out in this championship.

Jansen is the 1.33 favourite but a match between two players making their debut makes no appeal to me. No bet.

Niels Zonneveld vs. Lewis Williams

Zonneveld made his debut here two years ago but lost 0-3 to Willie O’Connor. He is still only 24 years old but has had a tour card for three years. He is yet to make much of an impression in the majors and like so many of the young players, he has a good A game but lacks consistency. Niels has recent wins against James Wade, Peter Wright and Alan Soutar, but he is hard to predict.

Lewy Williams is another young player who blows hot and cold. He has lost six of his last ten matches at senior level but for whatever reason, he has not played since 20th October, so what kind of form he is in is anyone’s guess. He has impressed me at times this year and he has a good A game, but the same can be said for both players.

The market has Zonneveld as the 1.60 favourite which seems a bit short to me, but I am concerned by William’s absence for the last seven or eight weeks. There will be better opportunities. No bet.

Jose De Sousa vs. Simon Whitlock

Simon Whitlock made hard work of beating Christian Perez in the first round. We had him to win 3-0 but after winning the first set he struggled and ended up falling over the line with a 3-2 win. A win is a win at the World Championship and he is still in it. Whitlock has departed in the second round in four of the last six years. The Aussie has lost five of his last ten matches, De Sousa six of his.

Jose de Sousa has made the third round here for the last two years. His recent form is not good, losing six of his last ten matches and he has become inconsistent and lacking in confidence.

Their H2H record is 3-2 to De Sousa but it is Whitlock who has won their last two, both this year. They have met twice on TV and Jose won them both, 10-9 in this year’s Masters and 16-12 in the 2020 Grand Slam semi-final.

Jose The Fav

De Sousa is the 1.73 favourite, Whitlock 2.25 and the money has been coming for Whitlock. He is capable of winning it but neither player is in good form and it is hard to feel confident about either.

Both players are big 180 hitters, Whitlock ranked 4th for 180s per leg in the last 12 months and De Sousa 10th. Whitlock’s last six matches have seen him either killing the treble 20 or not knowing where it is. His 180 per leg rate has been over 0.70 in three and under 0.20 in the other three. Hopefully he finds plenty here and a close, long match would help.
