Monday night Grand Slam of Darts Preview
James Punt landed another couple of winners on Sunday but we were a few missed doubles away from having a great weekend overall. The Group Stage action continues tonight and James is back with another preview. Check out his Monday Night Grand Slam of Darts tips below.
Dirk van Duijvenbode vs. Adam Gawlas
Dirk has already qualified for the knockout round, Gawlas is already knocked out, but it is not an entirely dead rubber. Dirk will want to make sure he wins the group to pick up the £3500 bonus and meet a group runner up in the next round, rather than a group winner.
Both players have won six of their last ten matches but in contrasting styles. Gawlas has had seven sub 90 averages in his last ten, Dirk six ton plus averages.
Dirk is the 1.22 favourite, and it would be a surprise if he were to lose. However, Gawlas is a better player than he has shown so far but he just hasn’t found his A game for a while. Van Duijvenbode has hit 11 maximums from his 17 legs played and that sort scoring power will put Gawlas under a lot of pressure just to hold throw. So, I’ll take Dirk to win with a wide margin.

Raymond van Barneveld vs. Ted Evetts
Barney kept up his good record against Gerwyn Price in a high-quality match with both players averaging over the ton. It was only Barney’s third ton plus average in his last 50 matches, so it was a bit of an outlier in terms of performance. That said, he is on a run of nine wins from his last ten matches and he will be feeling confident and win here and he will top the group
Ted Evetts on the other hand is on a run of five straight defeats and is already eliminated.
In Form Barney
Barney is in form, confident and motivated to win the group. Evetts is on his way home whatever happens. There is no H2H for guidance, but the market makes Barney the 1.44 favourite and he should have too much for Evetts who has only won three legs so far. He has been good on his doubles, but he just hasn’t the chance to go for many because his two opponents both averaged over 100 against him.
Evetts might get a few more chances if Barney reverts to something like his seasonal norm after yesterday’s heroics. The problem is, he is just 1.5 getting a +2.5 leg handicap and that means winning three legs, which he hasn’t managed yet. There is no great value on either player. No bet.

Simon Whitlock vs. Christian Perez
The Wizard is carrying a leg injury, not for the first time, but at least he doesn’t have to kick the darts in. He is the 1.17 favourite here which looks a bit short. Perez may have lost both his matches so far, but he hasn’t been a complete push over.
He missed five darts to land our handicap bet yesterday which was very frustrating in what was a very frustrating day. He is only averaging in the low 80s which makes winning very unlikely, especially against a player averaging 98.
Whitlock is in a very good position. A win here and he is through as I really can’t see Suljovic getting anything against Noppert. It is another match, or mismatch, which has no betting interest. No bet.

Danny Noppert vs. Mensur Suljovic
Suljovic has been the most disappointing player of the tournament so far. He averaged just 84 against Perez yesterday and was lucky that Perez just couldn’t close out legs. He was a little better against Whitlock in the first round of matches, but he lost that 5-2 and with Noppert in decent form, he is likely to get a beating in this one.
Their H2H record is 4-3 to Noppert and they met in the group stage of the 2016 Grand Slam, which Noppert won 5-3. Mensur might be lucky to get close to winning three legs tonight. Noppert is a much better player these days while Suljovic is on the decline.
Noppert is the 1.50 favourite, Suljovic 3.00. I am happy to back Noppert on the handicap market.

Gerwyn Price vs. Dave Chisnall
This is a BIG match. Price’s surprise loss to Raymond van Barneveld yesterday means he needs to win if he is to carry our bet into the knockout stage. He has averaged over a ton in both his matches so far and there is very little wrong with his game.
The Iceman seemed quite relaxed in defeat yesterday and he probably feels he has enough to win this. That may be a bit premature as Chisnall is in good form, hitting five ton plus averages in his last ten matches, winning seven of them.
Their H2H record is 6-5 to Price and in 2022 it is 1-1. In TV matches, which may be the better guide, it is 4-1 to Price.
Chizzy Played Well Yesterday
Chisnall was poor against Barney in his opening match, losing 3-5 and averaging 90, but he played more like what we expect from him when averaging 101 when beating Ted Evetts 5-2 yesterday.
Price is the 1.62 favourite, which is a little short given Chisnall’s 2022 form. The money has been going down on Chisnall and he is now a best priced 2.40. Any value, and again there isn’t much, would be on Chisnall, but Price on TV has proven to be hard to beat for Chizzy. It’s another no bet for me and hopefully Price can progress and not be another early-stage loser for my outright tips.

Joe Cullen vs. Lisa Ashton
Cullen needs a win here to progress. He hasn’t played that well so far, averaging 93.5 against Edhouse and 90.70 vs. Michael Smith. This should be a mere formality but he’ll need to find a bit more scoring power for the knockout stage.
Ashton’s Grand Slam record is now played 11 lost 11. The problem is scoring. Ashton’s seasonal average is just 81.2 which isn’t enough to cut it at Challenge Tour level, never mind a PDC major. She has won five legs so far, three against Michael Smith and two against Edhouse.
With Cullen not firing on all cylinders it is likely that Ashton can win a leg or two. Cullen will want to win by a big margin, just in case Edhouse should beat Smith and leg difference would then be important.
Cullen is the 1.11 favourite, Ashton 7.00. Ashton has gotten a little better in this event over the last couple of years. She has won nine legs across her last four matches where previously, it took her nine matches to win ten legs. The 1-5 defeats have gone but she has lost three of her last four 2-5.
Monday night Grand Slam of Darts tips: 1 point Joe Cullen to win 5-2 @ 4.33 with Betfred
Michael Smith vs. Ritchie Edhouse
This is not quite a formality for Smith but winning it should be within his capabilities. Their H2H record is 4-1 to Smith. Those were all floor matches and three went to a deciding leg. Edhouse may be a journeyman, but he has been around for a while now and had a tour card for 5 years, so he is a decent player.
He doesn’t have the same kind of TV experience as Smith and his highest average on TV is 95.7. Smith should have too much firepower for Edhouse to cope with, but if he plays like he did against Lisa Ashton, then he could be in trouble. He was better against Cullen but Cullen was poor, averaging 90.
Edhouse has only managed two sub 90 averages so far and he is going to have to do much better.
Smith has only ever lost one of his final group matches and that was on debut. He is the 1.25 favourite, and we have 2 points on him to win the group at 1.80, so we are ahead of the curve. I will have a small play on Smith to win 5-2.
Monday night Grand Slam of Darts tips: 0.5 point Smith to win 5-2 @ 4.6 with Betfred
Rob Cross vs. Martin Schindler
It is squeaky bum time for Cross after his 3-5 loss to Dirk van Duijvenbode. He averaged just 88.5 in that match, and he will have to do better if he is to keep his 100% record of making the knockout stage of the Grand Slam.
Voltage has only won two TV matches in 2022 and despite winning eight of his last ten matches, his form has been very hot and cold. His last five matches have seen averages of 103, 91, 88, 100 and 88. It is hard to say which Cross is going to turn up.
Hot And Cold
Schindler has also won eight of his last ten matches and also like Cross, his form is very hot and cold. His last five averages have been 93, 102, 90, 98 and 90. Again, it’s very hard to know what you are going to get.
With two players in wildly fluctuating form going H2H in a very important match, it is hard to have much confidence in making a selection. Their H2H record is 5-3 to Cross and in 2022 it is 1-1. They have met just once on TV and that was a 6-0 win for Cross, but that was back in 2017 when Cross was peaking.
Their first three matches all ended 6-0. More recently they have been closer, but none have gone to a deciding leg. Under 8.5 legs is just 1.30 and this is another match where a no bet is the best recommendation.
