Monday PDC World Championship Preview

Just the one session today at the Ally Pally and James Punt has previewed every game. Last night was a bit of a struggle but form is temporary and class is permanent so keep  the faith. Check out James’ Monday PDC World Championship Tips below.

Luke Woodhouse vs. James Wilson

James Wilson has had his darting career derailed by injury and his win rate in 2021 is just 37.5% but there have been more positive signs of late and his average is actually up 4 points to 93.5 year on year. He has won six of his last ten including a win over Peter Wright. His confidence will still be fragile but he will have been pleased with a solid performance to come through the qualifying event for this event.

Woodhouse holds a 3-1 H2H record against Wilson and his wins have been fairly comfortable. He has won five of his last ten matches and this will be his third World Championship. He won one of his two first round matches, beating Paul Lim 3-0 in 2019 but losing 2-3 to Jamie Lewis last year.

Wilson has only won one of his four opening matches here and that is his only win on the Ally Pally stage, so he hasn’t got too many happy memories to draw on.

Woodhouse is the 1.67 favourite, with Wilson a 2.40 shot. The odds look about right.

One aspect of Wilson’s game that has been good is his 180 hitting. He is hitting 180s per leg at 29% compared to Woodhouse’s 22% and in the qualifying event it was 42% for Wilson.

Rusty-Jake Rodriguez vs. Ben Robb

Rusty-Jake will have to go some way to match the performance of his brother earlier in the tournament. Rusty is not in good form, at senior level at least. He reached the quarter final of the World Youth Championship last month but he has lost his last seven matches at senior level. His seasonal average is 90.3.

Robb is the New Zealand qualifier and we have seen him play in some World Series tournaments. He qualified for the 2020 World Championship but lost 0-3 to Ron Meulenkamp. How much darts he has been able to play in 2021 is the question.

Rusty-Jake is the 1.50 favourite and he should be able to justify his favouritism, but it is not a betting match for me.

Raymond van Barneveld vs. Lourence Ilagan

Former Champion, Van Barneveld, has to kick off his campaign with a first-round match against Philippines qualifier, Ilagan, who is making his sixth appearance. He has lost all his matches but has at least won at least a set in his last three.

Barney may not be the force of old, but he is a steady performer, winning 63% of his matches and averaging 94.6. He has won six of his last ten matches. Barney has only ever lost three of his opening PDC World Championship matches and he is unlikely to lose this one.

Van Barneveld is the 1.30 favourite, Ilagan 3.80

James Wade vs. Maik Kuivenhoven

There is no head to head form to go on here. Wade is the better player and has only lost three of his opening matches in the World Championship. He has won six of his last ten matches, Kuivenhoven just four.

The Dutchman wasn’t impressive when beating Aussie Ky Smith yesterday. He was the 3-1 victor but Smith only averaged 79 and should have been put to bed much quicker.

Wade has never won the World Championship but he is a three time semi-finalist and has five more quarter final appearances. He has won a lot of matches on this stage and there is not a lot to make me think he won’t win another tonight.

Wade is the 1.30 favourite, Kuivenhoven 4.00. Wade has rarely been taken to a fifth set in his opening match and he looks reasonable value to see off Kuivenhoven without too much fuss.

Monday PDC World Championship Tips: 2 points Wade to win -1.5 sets @ 1.73 with Ladbrokes
