Monday World Matchplay Darts Preview
Things didn’t quite go to plan for us on Sunday. The Aubergenius was our sole winner on a tough day but James Punt is hoping to get back on the board tonight. Check out his Monday World Matchplay Darts tips below.
Sunday Review
It was a bit of a strange day yesterday and not a good one for the tips. There were quite a few disappointing performances and one-sided games. Brendan Dolan missed three darts to win our total legs bet by 1. Michael Smith did beat Gilding, but he took a long time to get into gear and didn’t cover the handicap.
Damon Heta didn’t turn up and lost 2-10 to Joe Cullen. Martin Lukeman didn’t handle the conditions and went down tamely to an under-par James Wade 4-10. Adrian Lewis wasn’t able to take advantage of a modest display by MVG, losing 7-10 and Luke Humphries was slow out of the blocks and never really got into his game with Nathan Aspinall, losing 5-10 and only hitting two 180s. Hopefully things will go better this evening.
Rob Cross vs. Chris Dobey
Former champion, Rob Cross only won two matches at last weekend’s players championship events, but he played well enough and he has been playing well for most of the year, but just not getting over the winning line. Three times a runner up on the Euro Tour, five losing players championship quarter finals and two losing semi-finals. Close but no cigar.
He is hard to fancy in the outright markets, but he is winning plenty of matches. His Matchplay record is strange. He has played in five, won it in 2019 but never got beyond the second round in the other four. He has lost six of his last ten, but he played better than that sounds.
Dobey The Underachiever
Chris Dobey is making his third Matchplay appearance but lost his previous two first round matches. He is arguably the highest scoring journeyman pro there is. His game has all the qualities of the top players, but he has picked up just two pro tour titles in his eight years on the tour. He made two major semi-finals in 2019 but never improved on that. If this was his school report it would have to say, ‘could do better’.
Their H2H record is 5-4 to Cross. They have played two matches on stage and Cross won both, one in this tournament in 2019 when he won 10-3 in the first round. Dobey has lost five of his last ten matches and in those ten he had four 98+ averages but also four sub 90’s.
His nickname is Hollywood, but he seems to have an aversion to cameras, losing seven of his last ten matches on TV. It doesn’t seem to matter what he does, he just struggles to win. He can average a ton+ and lose and I guess it just comes down to confidence.
Cross is a best price 1.62 favourite and while Dobey has the game to cause an upset, history suggests it will be Cross going through to the second round.

Jose de Sousa vs. Gabriel Clemens
Two players who have been opposable for a while now. The Special One really has lost his mojo. At his best he was right up there with the really heavy scorers. Now his 12 month average has dropped to 95.5 and 25th in the scoring rankings. It is still better than Clemens’ 92.5 as he too has lost momentum.
The German Giant looked set for great things but since going full time, he has stopped improving and actually gone backwards. There was some encouragement when he reached the final of PC18 a couple of weeks ago. He got a good draw, it must be said, but he did beat Aspinall 7-6 in the semi-final before being destroyed 0-8 by Dirk van Duijvenbode in the final. He didn’t continue that run and has lost four of his last six matches.
Their H2H record is a comprehensive 5-1 to De Sousa. They met in this event in 2021 and it was De Sousa who won 10-2. His game has declined since then and most recently he has lost six of his last ten matches. Six of those last ten saw averages below 90 (as low as 80.7) and he is hard to fancy, despite his great H2H record over Clemens.

Gerwyn Price vs. Martin Schindler
Price is one of the big guns who isn’t firing at the moment. Ever since injuring his hand earlier in the year, he just hasn’t been the player we have become used to. He has lost five of his last seven matches but still puts in some excellent performances, such as when he averaged 117.68 when beating Martin Schindler 4-0 in the World Cup of Darts.
Schindler has been threatening to win a tournament for a while now. He had dropped off the radar, but his game is back to his best. He has won six of his last ten matches and reached the semi-final of PC 20 just over a week ago. The draw opened up nicely for him that day and Damon Heta aside, he didn’t have to beat much and lost the semi-final 3-7 to Boris Koltsov. His A game is excellent, but we haven’t seen quite as often more recently.
Price Superior H2H Record
Their H2H record is 7-3 to Price and Schindler has won just one of their last six. Schindler did beat Price 5-4 in last year’s Grand Slam, but lost the next two, both on TV, 1-6 and 0-4.
Price is generally opposable at the moment as he starts most matches as the short priced favourite, but he does seem to have Schindler’s number. He has handed him several spankings, a 6-0, two 6-1s a 6-2 and that 4-0 in the recent World Cup.
Of the 12 matches we have seen so far, seven have seen under 17 legs and this might be another.

Dave Chisnall vs. Kim Huybrechts
With a seasonal win rate of 72%, Dave Chisnall has to be fancied to go through to the second round. He has won eight of his last ten matches and while he lacks the consistency to win titles, his A game remains excellent. He has played over 100 matches in 2022 but only made one final and that was back in January at The Masters. Chizzy warmed up for this by reaching the semi-final of PC21 last Monday.
The H2H record is 14-5 to Dave Chisnall, but they have only met once in the last four years and Chizzy won that 6-5 in April.
Kim Huybrechts has won six of his last ten matches but only three of his last ten saw averages above 90.
Chisnall is the 1.50 favourite and clearly Huybrechts needs to up his game on what he has been doing recently. We have backed Chizzy to win his quarter so hopefully he can get through this without taking too long on a hot stage.
