Night 15 Premier League Darts Tips by James Punt
We were 1/2 with our selections on Night 14. Jonny Clayton was outgunned by Jose De Sousa but Peter Wright got the job done for us at 2.50 with an 8-5 win over Van Den Bergh. James Punt is back in action again tonight, check out his Night 15 Premier League darts tips below.
Night 15 Premier League: Jonny Clayton vs. Peter Wright
With two more matches before the playoffs, the players are getting nervous, none more so than Jonny Clayton. He lost 5-8 to Jose de Sousa last night and put in one of his worst performances of the year. He looked very nervous and was missing big numbers, hardly hit a treble and it was his three big ton plus checkouts that kept the score respectable. The fact is, for a player averaging nearly 100 for the year, he has had three sub 94 averages in his last four matches. That isn’t going to get you anywhere at this level.
Peter Wright, out of contention and playing without any pressure, has won his last two matches and has kept himself in with a mathematical chance of making the playoff. It is still a very slim chance, and he remains under very little pressure, he is just having fun and trying to pick up an extra five or ten grand prize money. He beat Dimitri van den Bergh 8-5 last night despite the Belgian averaging 106.
These two last met on the opening night of the league and that match ended with a draw. Jonny Clayton averaged 105 that night and he will need something similar tonight if he is to get anything from this match. He remains in fourth place, thanks to Peter Wright beating Dimitri van den Bergh and he remains under a great deal of pressure. It is hard to see how The Ferret will rediscover his A-game whilst under intense pressure.
Some bookmakers are making Clayton the favourite which is bonkers.

James Wade vs. Dimitri van den Bergh
Dimitri van den Bergh is in the same boat as Clayton, but at least he is still playing well. He just can’t buy a win. His phase two averages have been 106.7, 102.8, 104.4, 95.8 and 106.9 and he has won just one match and scored two points. He must be hugely frustrated.
James Wade is now definitely out of the playoffs and he is just playing for pride/prizemoney and is without pressure. He was effectively already out of the picture last night but still averaged 101 in a 7-7 draw with Nathan Aspinall.
Their H2H record is 2-2-2 and their two Premier League matches have ended in draws.
Van den Bergh is due a break, is due a win, but the pressure just gets bigger with every defeat. Playing after Jonny Clayton means Dimitri will know what he has to do. If Clayton loses, a point will keep him in the game, if Clayton draws or wins, the pressure to win gets higher. Whatever happens, it looks likely his match with Clayton on Thursday will decide who gets into the playoffs.
Wades form in the second phase has been mixed with anything from 92 to 110 averages. You can never be sure of which James Wade will turn up, but he remains the best doubles hitter in the league and that makes him hard to beat. He has drawn two of his last four matches and with these two having such a close H2H record, another would be no surprise.
Night 15 Premier League Tip: 1 point drawn match @ 5.00 with BET365
Gary Anderson vs. Nathan Aspinall
Anderson joins Wade on the definitely out list. He lost 4-8 to MVG last night, missed a couple of leg winning doubles and let Van Gerwen off the hook. He doesn’t have a good record with Aspinall and it is The Asp who leads 4-2 with one draw. Aspinall won the first phase match 7-2 but Anderson was particularly poor that night, averaging 88. It is hard to see him playing that badly again but what his motivation will be like is open to question.
The Asp drew with James Wade last night and he looks safe enough on 18 points, but he would like one more to make sure. He played well for most of last night’s match but had a couple of meltdowns on doubles which may have cost him the win. He shouldn’t be as nervous tonight and will be able to play freely.
Gary Anderson has played very well in phase two but wasn’t quite on it last night. Will he be up for this match or thinking ahead to a bit of fishing at the weekend?
Nathan Aspinall is the 2.20 favourite to win and that is hard to argue with but not great value. No bet.
Michael van Gerwen vs. Jose de Sousa
Van Gerwen finally had a middling sort of performance last night, averaging 98 and beating Gary Anderson 8-4. He started the match poorly and looked set of have another off night, but he found his game just as Anderson missed a double to keep the match tight and MVG under pressure. It remains difficult to have total confidence in his form.
Jose de Sousa did not have to be at his best to beat a very nervous Jonny Clayton 8-5. The Special One was a bit ordinary but he was never in any bother against the struggling Clayton.
Their H2H record is 4-2 to MVG but there is definitely a bit of an edge to this match. When they met in the first phase, MVG was very vocal, intimidating a player he knows is a real threat. He wants to bully and undermine De Sousa, who he has dismissed as someone who hits a lot of 180s but is ‘boring’. Why the attacks? Because he lost a European Tour final to De Sousa and he does not need another pest who is not afraid of him.
De Sousa Capable
If De Sousa plays his A-game he can beat Van Gerwen, especially the ‘bad’ MVG which is increasingly on display. MVG on his A-game would be harder to beat but you don’t know which one is going to turn up.
Van Gerwen is safely through and just wants to top the league, pick up the £25000 bonus for doing so, and give De Sousa a beating. De Sousa is not safe yet but he is not out of the frame for topping the league himself. I doubt he will be thinking about that, however.
We can expect De Sousa to put in another good performance, a high 90’s or ton plus average is his norm. MVG? Your guess is as good as mine. It is hard to bet on a match where one player is so unpredictable. No Bet.
