Saturday Afternoon Gibraltar Darts Trophy Preview

Well, that was quite the start for us on Friday. James Punt fired in five winners altogether, including a couple at very decent odds. Let’s hope for more of the same today. James’ Saturday Afternoon Gibraltar Darts Trophy tips are below.

Rob Cross vs. Rusty-Jake Rodriguez

Rob Cross remains on the oppose list. Since returning from the summer break he has lost four of his six matches. Is Rusty-Jake the man to oppose him with?

He hasn’t made much impression in players championship events and spends much of his time at development tour level. This is his third ETnament in 2022, and he has now won six of his eight matches and made a quarter final in ET last month.

That’s a good strike rate. His scoring normally shouldn’t be enough to bother a player of Cross’ abilities, but clearly he has his moments and can take his chances if they come along. Cross’ game seems to revolve around his doubling and if he starts missing, he is losing.

There is no H2H form as a guide but I’ll take a chance on the outsider.

Ryan Searle vs. William O’Connor

Ryan Searle is another on the oppose list. In his last eight matches he has a solitary win over Bradley Brooks, and only one average over 90.5. Like Cross, Searle is struggling with the outer ring. When he is hitting, he still hasn’t been winning and his confidence will be fragile. On the ET he has lost 12 of his 20 matches.

Willy O’Connor put in a solid performance when beating Jim Williams 6-1 and averaging 97. Since the summer break, O’Connor has played seven and won six, so his form is encouraging as he tries to qualify for the finals.

Searle is 4-2 in the H2H’s but they haven’t played since November 2020 and O’Connor has won their last two.

Given his recent struggles, Searle can be opposed with the in-form O’Connor.

Dave Chisnall vs. Wesley Plaisier

Big Wes did the business for us yesterday, beating Jeff Smith 6-0. That was his eighth ET match win from twelve played so he is clearly at home on the ET stage. He is just £1k shy of making the finals, although he may need to win this and a third round match to make sure, so there is quite a bit of pressure on him here.

No such worries for the winner of the last ET event, Dave Chisnall. Chizzy is the 1.36 favourite which is a bit short in truth, but we have backed him outright so hopefully he can end Plaisier’s ambitions.

Dirk van Duijvenbode vs. Jason Lowe

Lowe’s 6-2 win over a local qualifier was just his fourth in his last nineteen matches. An average of 80 was enough for a 6-2 win, but he will need to improve massively if he is to make any further progress.

Dirk has lost five of his last ten matches, so he’s not in top form, but his B game should be enough to see off Lowe. He is the 1.18 favourite but he should be able to cover the handicap.

Danny Noppert vs. Ryan Joyce

Another of our ante post selections, Danny Noppert, will need to be on the ball here. Joyce is a dangerous opponent and having won seven of his last ten matches, he has hit a patch of decent form. He is deadly on the doubles, ranked 3rd for checkout % over the last 12 months. If he gets chances, he can take them.

Noppert has lost five of his last ten matches, but his scoring remains top notch, as it should for a major winner and top 10 ranked player. He has played Joyce twice, both times in 2019 and lost both. Noppert is the 1.50 favourite which makes no appeal against a tricky opponent.

Jose de Sousa vs. Rowby-John Rodriguez

There was no rust on Rowby-John’s game yesterday when he averaged 97.7 in a 6-3 win over Keane Barry. It is always hard to say how a player will go after a long break and I called it wrong yesterday.

De Sousa has won three of their previous four matches, including a 6-2 win in the quarter final of ET6 in May. The Special one is a tricky player to get a handle on. He still hits a lot of big averages, like the 106 against Ryan Searle 6-4 in Belgium, but follows up with an indifferent performance.

That is what happened in Belgium, as he averaged 86 when losing the semi-final to Dave Chisnall. He has won six of his last ten matches and four of those saw four averages under 91 and you really don’t know what you are going to get with Jose, which is no good for betting.

De Sousa is the 1.57 favourite, Rodriguez 2.37 and this makes no appeal as a betting opportunity.

Damon Heta vs. Chris Dobey

It had to happen some time on my watch. A match between the games two great underachievers. They have met twice and Heta won them both.

Damon Heta has lost 10 of his last 12 matches despite many good averages. Chris Dobey didn’t have to do much to beat young Dylan Duo 6-1 last night and he has won seven of his last ten. He has lost all three of his ET second round matches this season and is hard to get enthusiastic about.

Two players who can’t be trusted doesn’t make for a great betting proposition. You can make a good case for either player losing, hard to argue for them winning. Heta’s loss rate recently is alarming. Dobey is winning many more matches and at 2.30 he looks the sensible call, but there is no sense with these two. No bet.

Nathan Aspinall vs. Vincent van der Voort

Aspinall was runner up in the Grand Prix last week and has won six of his last ten matches. He will be feeling good about things and we are on him outright. He is the 1.44 favourite which looks a little short given their H2H record, which sees a narrow lead for Aspinall who has won five of their nine matches.

Van der Voort has only won one of his three ET second round matches but he is in decent form having won seven of his last ten matches. Aspinall will have to be up for this game or he could slip up against a decent opponent.

Aspinall is a big 180 hitter and after a slow start he was banging them in for fun in the later stages of the World Grand Prix last week. He should be able to edge Vincent in that part of the game at better odds than for winning the match.

Saturday Afternoon Gibraltar Darts Trophy tips: 1 point Aspinall to have the most 180’s @ 1.70 with Ladbrokes
