Sunday Afternoon Belgian Darts Open Tips
Saturday evening’s session was a struggle for James Punt but he is back for more punishment on Finals Day. His Sunday Afternoon Belgian Darts Open tips can be viewed below.
Andrew Gilding vs. Niels Zonneveld
Goldfinger has averaged 97.5 across his two matches so far and his 6 week break has not taken the shine off his form. We were a bit unlucky last night when he missed a match dart to win 6-4, but to beat the Belgian number 1 in Belgium was a great result for him. It was a masterclass in keeping a rabid home crowd quiet….very quiet.
Zonneveld ended the hopes of our number1 selection, Peter Wright, with a 6-5 win. Wright played quite well but practicing his approach for the upcoming Grand Prix did him no favours. Zonneveld didn’t score as well as Wright, but it was above his own seasonal average.
Unpredictable
Like all the young players, consistency is the last part of the game to come together and that makes him hard to predict. His A game is a lot better than what we have seen from him so far this weekend, but across his last 50 matches 42% saw sub 90 averages.
These two have met twice and it is one win apiece, both ending 6-5. Both of Gilding’s matches this weekend ended 6-5 and Zonneveld beat Wright 6-5. I would expect Gilding to win but another close match is possible, so long as Zonneveld doesn’t hit one of his sub 90 days, which he will at some point.

Rusty-Jake Rodriguez vs. Martin Schindler
Rusty-Jake’s 88.9 average was enough to beat Damon Heta 6-5 yesterday. The Aussie just isn’t doing it at the moment but that was a particularly worrying performance for him. Rodriguez has won six of his last ten matches and reached the quarter finals two weeks ago, but he isn’t shooting the lights out and will be vulnerable against a heavier scorer who can finish legs in 15 darts or less.
Their H2H record is a healthy 4-1 for Schindler but most of that form is over 2 years old and it was Rodriguez who won their only match in 2022. That was a 6-5 win and all but one of their matches have required a deciding leg.
Schindler is the 1.50 favourite which is fair enough but Rodriguez is full of confidence at the moment and this could be another close match.

Dirk van Duijvenbode vs. Jonny Clayton
Both players required a deciding leg to win their opening matches. Dirk averaged 99.5 when beating Merv King, Clayton 91.2 when scraping past Keane Barry. Based purely on those two performances, Dirk wins this.
Their H2H record is 6-3 to Clayton but Dirk beat him 11-8 in the semi-final of the World Series last weekend. They are two of the big beasts of the game, both heavy scorers and closely matched.
Van Duijvenbode is our last remaining ante post selection and that is enough interest for me. It looks a bit of a coin toss but I suspect Van Duijvenbode will prevail as he just looks that bit sharper. Clayton wasn’t great yesterday and he will have to up his game if he is to progress.

Rob Cross vs. Gabriel Clemens
It was a perfect display on the outer ring that ended Clemens dire run of form on the euro tour and his four match losing run. Cross was very ordinary when beating Mike de Decker 6-4 in a forgettable match.
Clemens has a 5-1 H2H record over Cross, but it was Cross who won their last match on the euro tour back in May.
Winning one match does not mean that Clemens is back to his best, but back to back ton plus averages is encouraging and he was delighted with his performance yesterday. Cross wasn’t.
Rob Cross was in great form before the summer break but he has been less than convincing since, playing four and losing two. The market still believes he is a strong favourite to beat Clemens but from what we saw yesterday and their H2H record, Clemens looks the value bet.

Ryan Searle vs. Jose de Sousa
Ryan Searle ended his run of poor form with a 6-1 win over Bradley Brooks, but it was hardly a grand statement of a return to form. He averaged just 90.1 but that was more than enough against an opponent averaging 79.6. A win today and maybe he is on the way back.
Jose de Sousa ended the hopes of our 101.00 selection, Ross Smith yesterday, but he survived three match darts against him, and he dodged a few bullets. He did well to stick with Smith who played really well up to those vital missed doubles.
Smith averaged 103.3 but lost 5-6 to a De Sousa averaging a very respectable 98.5. It was a proper game of darts. The Special One has the talent to do special things and he rode the storm and just got a break at the right time. He reached the semi-final two weeks ago and while he is not back to his best, he is playing a lot better than Searle. Their H2H is 2-1 to De Sousa with all matches played last year. The last two went to a deciding leg, but I doubt this one will.

Nathan Aspinall vs. Dave Chisnall
Chizzy was impressive in his 6-2 win over Jelle Klassen, not least because Klassen played very well, but still got hammered. It wasn’t a perfect display and there is room for improvement, which might be bad news for Aspinall.
The Asp beat Jamie Hughes 6-1 in a tidy display, averaging 97.7 and he was never in any bother. Aspinall has won six of his last ten matches, but he hasn’t been very consistent, with four of those matches having sub 90 averages.
Their H2H record is 6-6 but Aspinall has won all three of their matches played this season, ending a run of four straight defeats to Chizzy.
This is the definition of a coin toss match and a no bet for me.

Joe Cullen vs. Danny Noppert
This is another coin toss match with the market struggling to find a favourite. Noppert is the 1.91 favourite, Cullen 2.00. Their H2H record is 3-3, but on the euro tour it is 2-1 to Noppert, including a 6-1 win back in May. Cullen was the more impressive yesterday, beating Nilsson 6-2 and averaging 97 while Noppert was more laboured in his 6-5 win over Razma. Two of their three euro tour matches went to a deciding leg and this could be something similar.

Kim Huybrechts vs. Adrian Lewis
The home crowd was treated to a win for Huybrechts over MVG last night. It was a poor match, exciting, but poor and Kim only managed an average of 84.8. He is going to have to up his game today if he is to go any further.
Lewis was at his best when pasting Boris Kcrmar 6-1, averaging 103 in the process. Clearly, he has been able to put his troubles to one side and regained the form that took him to the PC20 title a while back. He is 13-7 against Huybrechts and Huybrechts isn’t the player he once was, whilst Lewis retains much of his ability.
