Sunday European Darts Matchplay Preview
James landed another nice winner yesterday with Scott Williams at 4.33. His Sunday European Darts Matchplay tips are below.
Rowby-John Rodriguez vs. Gabriel Clemens
Two of the many unseeded players to have made the final day. Rowby-John beat an out of form Gerwyn Price 6-2, averaging 96. That makes it seven wins from ten. His H2H record with Clemens is 3-3, but The German Giant has won their last two, including a 6-4 win back in February.
Clemens used the boisterous home crowd to get past Daryl Gurney in a deciding leg, but to be fair, he played well, averaging 98.5.
Will home favouritism be enough to get him past the Austrian? If he plays to that standard, he may not need the crowd’s help.
The bookies are struggling to find the favourite here with Rodriguez the 1.88 favourite and Clemens 2.00. I can’t argue with those odds and it is a no bet match.

Nathan Aspinall vs. Scott Williams
Williams did us proud by beating Jonny Clayton 6-4 last night. It wasn’t like Clayton gave a poor performance, he averaged 103, but Williams got control of the match early and held off Clayton who really made a match of it from 0-4 down, and Williams did well get over the line. Clayton is relentless and his comebacks often pay off.
Aspinall dismissed Jermaine Wattimena 6-2 and he is now won eight of his last ten matches.
This will be a repeat of the final of PC17 a couple of weeks ago, and it was Williams who was the winner by an 8-5 margin. Williams also won their only other match 6-1 back in April. All that without having a tour card.
Aspinall is the 1.44 favourite, Williams 2.88. This is a classic case of one player being made the short priced favourite, because he is the higher ranked player. The fact is that they have played twice in the last three months, and Williams won both. One was a ranking final, not small beer. The other was a spanking. This makes the choice easy.

Wesley Plaisier vs. Madars Razma
Big Wes has been good to us this weekend and he was a comfortable 6-1 winner over the out of form Jose de Sousa yesterday. It was a poor game and Plaisier didn’t need to get out of first gear to win. He has already made an ET quarter final this season and he is another non-tour card holder to be showing up the ‘elite’ players.
Razma continues to impress. He may not be the heaviest scorer, but he is very effective and very competitive. He beat the in-form home crowd favourite, Martin Schindler, 6-5 in a top-class match. Razma took on the crowd and the crowd lost. Normally a stupid thing to do, but he used the abuse to fire him up and get over the line with a good performance. That is two Germans he has beaten, so playing a Dutchman will be a little less stressful.
This is an usual case of the higher ranked player, Razma, being made the outsider against the unseeded player. I am not sure why. Razma is an experienced pro these days, he has reached ranking finals and is still improving. He likes a scrap and is backable in this match.

Rob Cross vs. Luke Woodhouse
Woody Woodhouse beat the hapless Ratajski 6-3 yesterday. The Pole just bottled it, no other word for it. He won the first two legs but then folded, letting Woodhouse win legs with 20 and 21 darts. Woodhouse averaged 87 and it was a match he was gifted rather than won.
Cross made a meal of his 6-5 win over James Wilson. Jammy Dodger wasn’t Jammy enough and missed darts for the match before Cross checked out 104 to steal it. It was not a great performance, but hopefully he can hit the doubles today and get back on the Euro Tour gravy train.
Cross will be aware that he has a poor record with Woodhouse (3-4) and he has lost their last three matches (4-6,4-6,5-6). He really shouldn’t be losing to a journeyman pro like Woodhouse but sometimes a player gets bogeyman opponents.
Despite the H2H record, Cross is the 1.34 favourite, too short for my liking, but he is carrying some of our ante post money to win the tournament and that is enough for me.

Martin Lukeman vs. Stephen Bunting
Lukeman is making the most of his chances on the Euro Tour and the ranking money is racking up nicely. He was helped by Ryan Searle just not turning up again, but does Lukeman care? Not at all. It is another £3k in the bank and the chance to make another quarter final. He has only averaged 90 across both his matches, and he will have to play better to win this, but maybe not that much better.
Bunting struggled to beat the young Pole Bialecki 6-5 but he played better than it sounds. It was only a 92 average, but he was solid on his throw and in the end, that was enough.
Their H2H record is 2-2 which doesn’t help split them. Bunting, being the higher ranked player, is the 1.73 favourite, with Lukeman 2.30. They are hard to split and Bunting just about deserves favouritism. The only thing that stands out in their H2H record is that none of the four matches, all played in the last 12 months, have gone beyond 8 legs.

Damon Heta vs. Dimitri van den Bergh
The only match of the third round to feature two seeds, such was the carnage of round two. It is also between two of the more fancied players to win the whole thing and we are on the in-form Van den Bergh.
Dimitri beat Florian Hempel 6-2 and averaged an eyewatering 111. More of that please. Heta only averaged 91.5 when beating Rydz 6-4 but he holds a 3-1 H2H record over his old housemate, Van den Bergh.
They last met in the recent World Cup of Darts which is where Dimitri got his only win over the Aussie, who of course went on to win the title.
Tails Up
Van den Bergh is the 1.73 favourite with Heta 2.20. It is a tough one to call as both players have their tails up after big wins and both are capable of beating the other. Hopefully Dimitri can justify favouritism and our bet can move on.
Van den Bergh hit a remarkable 8 maximums yesterday in an eight leg match. That is hard to fight against and could be the difference. Heta is a big maximum hitter, ranked 15th for 180’s per leg, but Dimitri is better, ranked 5th.

Luke Humphries vs. Lukas Wenig
Wenig turned on the style with a 101 average to beat the underachieving Dobey 6-4. Dobey scored well himself, but lost again. Today Wenig is up against Mr. Euro Tour, three time 2022 winner Luke Humphries.
Cool Hand beat Cameron Menzies 6-4 and like Wenig, he had to beat a player averaging a ton. It was a tough match but Humphries dug in and found what he needed to win. That certainly got any rust out of his game and he looks like he knows he can have a great chance to make it four titles.
Humphries is the 1.20 favourite to win, Wenig 5.00. That may be a bit dismissive of Wenig’s chances, but this is unknown territory for him and he is bound to get a bit tight, home crowd favourite or not. Again, we have backed Humphries outright and there is little reason to get involved here.

Ian White vs. Jeffery de Zwaan
Two unlikely third round participants. White averaged 101.5 when beating Joe Cullen 6-5 in one of his best performances for some time. Will that give him the confidence to take his chances here?
De Zwaan beat the in-form Dirk van Duijvenbode, also 6-5 and he averaged 98.3. Two good performances from the two outsiders in their respective ties.
It is hard to get a feel for two players who have been in the darting doldrums for a while now. I am a big de Zwaan fan and he looked like a player who was going to the very top a couple of years ago but White is a three time Euro Tour winner and has been a top player.
Interesting H2H
Their H2H record is interesting and long. 11-2 to White and De Zwaan has not beaten White since 2017. They have played three times on the Euro Tour and White won all three, the last a 6-1 win in 2019. Both players have regressed since then and this is a tough one to call. White is the 1.73 favourite, De Zwaan 2.20. It is a no bet match for me.
Due To F1 commitments, that is it from me darts wise for this week. Hopefully we can get one of our remaining selections home later tonight.
