Sunday Evening German Darts Open Tips

Our tough run ended in style yesterday with three winners, including one at 6.00. Let’s hope for more joy on Finals Night. Check out James Punt’s Sunday Evening German Darts Open tips below.

Luke Humphries vs. Joe Cullen

Humphries looked very good when beating Dave Chisnall earlier. It was a 6-3 win with a 105 average and he was never in any bother. Title number 5 on the way? Maybe.

Joe Cullen survived a match dart from Daryl Gurney in a topsy turvey match which neither player really got in control of. Cullen had the higher average but Gurney was still able to get in a position to win. Cullen still needs to up his game, but he managed to do just that last weekend and he is playing better this week.

Their H2H record is interesting, 3-3, but it is Humphries who has won their last three, including two in 2022.

Given Humphries’ excellent euro tour form in 2022 he has to be the call.

Peter Wright vs. Ross Smith

Snakebite didn’t play as well as Clayton but won their third round match 6-3. He is looking trim and hungry to get back to winning ways. He has put in two very strong performances so far and he will fancy his chances and not just in this match.

Ross Smith got a good 6-3 win over the disappointing Heta whose form is a worry going into the business end of the season. Smith is a very good player, just a bit inconsistent, but when he is in form, he can give anyone a problem. He averaged a whopping 106.7, hit four maximums and was 60% on the doubles. Peter Wright be warned.

Their H2H record is 5-2 to Wright and on the euro tour 2-1. Wright will start as the 1.36 favourite but there is a bit of value in Smith’s price. He hasn’t done much wrong apart from letting Noppert back into the second round match, but he got the job done before doing a job on Heta.

Gerwyn Price vs. Jose de Sousa

The H2H record between these two is 3-3 and it took three matches before Price got his first win. Jose was immune to his shouting and balling and just gets on with it. De Sousa’s form has dropped in the last year or two, but he still gave Price a game in the World Matchplay quarter final, losing 14-16 in the end. That is their only match in nearly two years.

De Sousa beat Steve Beaton 6-3 earlier, averaging a ton, and Beaton made him work hard for the win, averaging 99. It was a bit of a mixed bag with some great legs and some not so good. Price smashed up Martin Schindler 6-1 and averaged 106 and he looks in the mood this week. He enjoyed his match with Lewy Williams last night and he has his competitor head on.

Price was more clinical in his match today and it is De Sousa who needs to do a little better.

Sunday Evening German Darts Open tip: 1 point Price to win -1.5 legs @ 1.83 with Betfred

Krzysztof Ratajski vs. Dimitri van den Bergh

Ratajski fell over the line when beating our sole remaining ante post selection Rob Cross 6-5. It was one of the worst displays of doubling that you will see, from both players. The Polish Eagle missed 24 doubles in the match, seven of them to win the match, before he finally hit one in a 20 dart deciding leg. That won’t have done his fragile confidence any good. He wasn’t just missing, he was miles away.

Van den Bergh needed a deciding leg to get past Luke Woodhouse 6-5. He was 4-1 down at one stage and he was never very convincing until an 11 dart leg in the decider. He has been the least convincing of the quarter finalists, well, no that has to be Ratajski and I doubt the tournament winner comes out of this match. One of them has to win, however.

Their H2H record is 8-4 to Dimitri. Is that enough to back him? Neither player is playing well, and I am happy to give this one a miss.

Sunday Evening German Darts Open tip:  No Bet

That is it for me this week and I will be taking a holiday next week before the heavy lifting of what will be the busiest part of the season coming up. The World Series Finals will not be previewed.
