Sunday Evening International Darts Open Tips

We had to make do with just the one winner on a tough afternoon. James Punt is back one final time as we head into the quarter finals. Check out his Sunday Evening International Darts Open tips below.

Nathan Aspinall vs. James Wade

Not the quarter final I wanted to see. Wade, yeah, he is not a great surprise, but the ‘injured’ Nathan Aspinall? There didn’t seem too much wrong with him this afternoon. He averaged 95.5, was 40% on the doubles and hit three 180’s in his 6-3 win. He was helped by Cullen being very poor on the outer ring. Still, The Asp is 100% for wins in 2022.

James Wade smashed up Kim Huybrechts 6-1, averaging 100.1, 66% on the doubles, three 180’s. There were also 170 and 164 checkouts with two 12 dart legs.

The H2H record is 9-7 to Aspinall and they met three times last year with two wins for Aspinall and a draw in the Premier League.

There has to be some concerns about how long Aspinall’s injury remains manageable. He may not even know himself. However, if Wade can keep up the kind of form he showed this afternoon, Aspinall’s wrist may be the least of his worries.

Wade is not the most reliable player, but he seems in good fettle with another baby on the way and a happy Wade is a dangerous Wade.

Gerwyn Price vs. Danny Noppert

It was an easy 6-2 win for Price over the cursed Damon Heta. Price was just too good, again. He averaged 102.1 despite missing a few doubles and he never had to find top gear. That is how good he is these days.

Noppert did a good job vs. MVG, held his throw, and took the now inevitable chance that Van Gerwen gives his opponents these days. Noppy averaged 94.6, was 43% on the doubles and hit four maximums.

Their H2H record is 3-3 and the pattern is Price wins, Noppert wins the next. Noppert won their last match back in 2020, so it is the Welshman’s turn this evening. He looks the most likely winner and his record at this venue speaks for itself.

Price is the 1.38 favourite to win and there is no value here.

Dimitri van den Bergh vs. Jonny Clayton

It was an easy 6-1 win for Dimitri this afternoon, averaging 99.1 with 40% on the doubles. It was a very solid performance with legs of 15,18,15,16,13,14 darts. He was struggling to hit double 16 but kept on persisting with it, so there is room for improvement. He has only dropped four legs so far and he had to play a first round match. Van den Bergh is averaging 99.5 across his three matches and is looking good.

Jonny Clayton was OK in his 6-4 win over Lewy Williams, but he could have lost to a more experienced player. The Ferret found it hard to hold throw and he was let off the hook a couple of times. He averaged 96, with 46% on doubles but it was a scrappy performance.

The H2H stats show a 6-4 lead for Dimitri and they have met six times in the last 12 months and it was three wins apiece. They have met once in 2022 and it was Clayton who won 10-9 at the Masters.

Clayton was the least impressive player this afternoon and Dimitri looks the more likely winner against a Ferret who is not at his best, but still very dangerous.

Clayton is the 1.70 favourite but Dimitri looks the value at 2.37

Peter Wright vs. Michael Smith

Wright was a real mixed bag when beating Nico Springer. The German was outscoring Wright but was poor on the doubles and Wright needed two 114 checkouts to win the first two legs. He had a 104 to win the fourth and he had broken Springers spirit by then. Wright ended up with a 97.7 average and was 54% on the doubles. It was a decent performance, but a more experienced player may have caused him more problems.

Michael Smith took about 5 minutes to destroy Dirk van Duijvenbode 6-1 with a 102.5 average and 545 on doubles. Dirk was never in the game and Smith was allowed to gallop to a bloodless win. His reward is to face Peter Wright who has already beaten him twice in 2022, once in the World Championship final and again in the Premier League. Wright will be a very different kettle of fish.

The H2H record is 25-12 to Wright and he has won their last three, but Smith beat him 6-2 in a euro tour quarter final last September. This is a hard match to call but hopefully Snakebite reaches the semi-final and very possibly, a final against Price, to see who will be the world number 1.
