Sunday German Darts Grand-Prix Preview
James Punt continued his good form this weekend with another flurry of winners on Saturday evening and he is hoping for more of the same today. You can see his Sunday German Darts Grand-Prix preview and tips below.
Josh Rock vs. Berry van Peer
Van Peer Put in a very impressive performance yesterday, beating Jules van Dongen 6-1 and averaging 97.1. More of that and Rock has his work cut out. The Northern Irishman is a class act, but he hasn’t been firing on all cylinders latterly.
He has won six of his last ten matches and he is not in a slump, but he wasn’t impressive when beating Ian White 6-2 in the second round of ET2, averaging just 86, and it was an 89 average when losing to Van Duijvenbode in the quarter final. Last weekend he had back-to-back 93 averages, struggling to beat Florian Hempel 6-4 (Hempel is a pickup win these days) and losing 6-3 to Rob Cross.
If Van Peer can repeat yesterday’s form, then we have a match. We shouldn’t get too excited, his seasonal average is just 89.9, but his last three matches have all seen 97+ averages. That is hardly a long run, but he is clearly playing near the top of his game.
Rock is the 1.25 favourite, Van Peer 4.00. I was impressed enough to have a go with Berry. There are a few question marks over Rock’s form and encouraging signs for Van Peer.

Dave Chisnall vs. Dragutin Horvat
Horvat won our bet yesterday, beating the out of form Scott Waites 6-4. He made much harder work of it than he should have, and I do not fancy his chances of making the third round. Chisnall’s form has dropped off from the extraordinary levels of a few weeks ago, but he has won all three of his Euro Tour second round matches in 2023. He will win this one as well. Chisnall is the 1.18 favourite, Horvat 5.40.
Sunday German Darts Grand-Prix tip: 1 point Dave Chisnall to win -2.5 legs @ 1.67 with Ladbrokes
Dirk van Duijvenbode vs. Callan Rydz
Dirk is a man in form, his 79% win rate is the best in the tournament and he has won seven of his last ten. If it were not for Gerwyn Price, things would be looking even better for the Aubergenius. He has reached the quarter final of ET1, the final of ET2 and the semi-final of ET3. On the floor he has won PC4 and PC6. He is right up there as player of the season so far.
Rydz had a bit of a slow start against Matt Campbell, but the Canuck wasn’t firing and went down 3-6. Rydz was clearly delighted with the win, but his 94 average was only in line with his seasonal average, and he will likely need to find more today. He has got it in his locker, but he hasn’t shown it very often this season. He has won six of his last ten matches, but he has hit more sub 90 averages (3) than ton plus ones (1).
Their H2H record is 3-2 to Rydz but Dirk has won the last two, including a 6-4 win in February. Van Duijvenbode is the 1.40 favourite with Rydz 3.00. The odds are about right, and I’ll skip this for betting purposes.
Sunday German Darts Grand-Prix tip: No Bet
Rob Cross vs. Keane Barry
Barry beat Andy Boulton 6-3 in a fairly low quality affair. He is still playing a lot of Development tour matches and I’m not sure if that is good for his game. He plays better at senior level and has won six of his last ten at that level.
Rob Cross has won five of his last ten matches and his seasonal average is a healthy 95.2. He is playing his best stuff on the Euro Tour and reached the semi-final of ET2 and the quarter final of ET3 last weekend. It is a bit of a nearly season for Cross. He was runner up at the Masters, quarter finalist in the UK Open and has had those good runs in Europe, but a title still eludes him.
Cross has won all four of their previous matches, he is the 1.33 favourite to make it five and he should do. Cross can be backed at around evens giving up a 2.5 leg handicap, but he is still not quite banker material and Barry has a good enough game to threaten that. No bet.

Jonny Clayton vs. Andrew Gilding
The Ferret has won back-to-back Premier League nights and reached the quarter final of ET3 last weekend in between. That is eight wins from his last ten matches. It is still not peak Ferret but his confidence will be much higher which will help his performance.
Andrew Gilding has played nine matches since winning the UK Open and lost five of them. He is playing quite well on the whole, but he is finding winning hard. He had an easy 6-1 win over Tytus Kanik yesterday, but the Pole was only averaging 79.
The H2H record is 3-3 and all but their very first match back in 2014 have been close with three 6-4s, a 6-5 and 7-5.
Sunday German Darts Grand-Prix tip: 1 point over 9.5 legs @ 2.00 with Ladbrokes
Joe Cullen vs. Ross Smith
Smudger kicked off his campaign with a 101 average and a 6-1 win over Florian Hempel (just missing out on our 21.00 bet for 6-0!). I like when a player just thrashes an out of form opponent, no getting dragged down to their level, just give them a kicking and move on. He has won eight of his last ten matches and is in fine form.
Joe Cullen isn’t. He has lost six of his last ten matches, including a 4-6 loss to Smith in ET2 two weeks ago. He has lost his last four matches and the last three with sub 90 averages. Half of his last ten have seen sub 90 averages and he is not firing on all cylinders.
Smith is the 1.67 favourite and worth backing at the odds.
Sunday German Darts Grand-Prix tip: 1 point Ross Smith to win @ 1.67 generally available
Nathan Aspinall vs. Cameron Menzies
Menzies got an early Christmas present from Daryl Gurney last night. It must be said that Superchin put in one of his worst ever performances and Menzies won with an 84 average. Needless to say, he will unlikely be shown such largesse again this afternoon.
Aspinall is not in good form. losing six of his last ten matches. His seasonal win rate is just 53% and he is getting frustrated. There is little wrong with his game, he is averaging 96.7 in 2023, but he is finding winning hard. He lost his opening match in ET1, decided to take a holiday rather than play in ET2, and lost in the third round last weekend.
Mentality Issues
He should be winning a lot more matches than he is and that tells me it is a mental problem. To be fair on him, he is losing to very good players and Menzies is not a very good player. He can have great days and is no mug, but he is inconsistent and very beatable for a player of Aspinall’s ability.
Aspinall is the 1.33 favourite and he has won their three previous matches, including a 6-3 win in February.
Sunday German Darts Grand-Prix tip: 1 point Aspinall to win -2.5 legs @ 2.00 generally available
Jose de Sousa vs. Steve Beaton
Steve Beaton is enjoying his trips to Europe, making the quarter final of ET 1, now into the second round here and not without a chance of making the final days play. He beat Simon Whitlock 6-5 last night and it wasn’t a great match with both players averaging 88.
He now faces an out of form Jose de Sousa who has lost five of his last ten matches. His win rate in 2023 is just 52% and his seasonal average is 92.8. At his best, De Sousa was right up there in the top 10 scoring wise, now he is outside the top 30.
Strange Form
His Euro Tour form in 2023 is strange. He has played just three matches and won one, a 6-0 over a very poor Lee Evans last week. He lost his opening match 0-6 to Ted Evetts in ET and bowed out 1-6 to MVG last weekend. There is no consistency in his game and in his last ten he has hit a 107 average all the way down to 84.7.
If Beaton gets to play the bad De Sousa, he wins, if the old De Sousa makes an appearance he will likely lose. It is much more likely that he will face a beatable De Sousa right now. They have played twice before and both were easy wins for The Special One, 6-1 and 6-3. Beaton actually played very well in both, averaging 99 and 100, but only won four legs. De Sousa is on the wane and his confidence is lower than ever. He is worth taking on.
De Sousa is the 1.64 favourite and Beaton 2.38.
