Sunday Hungarian Darts Trophy Betting Preview

It was a game of two halves for James Punt on Saturday. He landed a couple of nice winners in the afternoon, but the evening session was tougher. At least our 33/1 ante post bet Peter Wright made it through. You can check out James’ Sunday Hungarian Darts Trophy tips below.

Apologies in advance. The database I use to get the form figures for these previews is on a go slow this morning so we are running on half power.

Peter Wright vs. Luke Woodhouse

Peter Wright has won their previous three matches, the last a Euro Tour match in 2022 which he won 6-0. I doubt we will see a repeat of that as Woodhouse is playing very well. He beat Rob Cross 6-3 yesterday, and while Cross was off his game, Woodhouse averaged 97 and went in for the kill. He is throwing well and really needs to win this match. If he does, he ties with Gian van Veen for the final place in the Grand Prix.

Wright played OK when beating Scott Waites 6-3 yesterday. Waites played quite well and it was another step in the right direction in his comeback.

Wright is the 1.53 favourite and Woodhouse 2.62. The value here lies with Woodhouse. We have a speculative bet on Wright to win the tournament and this is a very big banana skin. It is worth hedging our bet with Woodhouse at the odds.

Sunday Hungarian Darts Trophy tips: 1 point Luke Woodhouse to win @ 2.62 with Ladbrokes

Luke Humphries vs. Martin Schindler

Humphries sent out a message yesterday, thrashing Keane Barry 6-2 and averaging 108.59. It was Humphries at his best, it was the Humphries who won four of these titles last year and who has made five finals this year.

He will take some stopping. He knows the rhythm of Euro Tour weekends and he remains a very backable price to win the whole thing. MVG and Price also look strong but Cool Hand will be hard to stop.

Schindler is doing his thing, winning a few games, picking up nice prizemoney, but never threatening to win the title. Schindler is 3-6 vs. Humphries and he has lost their last two matches, including a 6-5 three weeks ago.

Humphries is the 1.36 favourite, Schindler 3.20. I won’t bet on this match but will have an interest in him to win the tournament.

Gerwyn Price vs. Joe Cullen

Joe Cullen, the defending champion, is up against a hungry looking Gerwyn Price. The Iceman whitewashed Nathan Rafferty 6-0 last night. Rafferty did his usual thing of playing very well against Price but Price was so good that Rafferty’s 98.19 average was only good enough to get him a single dart at a double. For the rest of the match, he may as well have been sitting in the crowd.

Cullen, for his part, was far from impressive when beating James Wade 6-4 with both players averaging less than 89. Needless to say that Cullen will have to find his A game if he is to get a look in here.

At this point the database server has completely crashed and I have no H2H data, well, no data of any kind.

Price is the 1.40 favourite and Cullen 3.00. It is hard to see anything other than a Price win but the odds are of little interest. No bet.

It is all just ‘gut feel’ from here on in.

Damon Heta vs. Gian van Veen

Van Veen was in much better shape yesterday when beating Aspinall 6-1. Aspinall. The Asp was dreadful on the doubles but scoring well.

Van Veen averaged 99.56 and was 50% on the doubles. A very good performance and enough to provisionally get him into the Grand Prix, but Luke Woodhouse is right with him, so it remains provisional. He will know how Woodhouse got on in the first match and that result will have a bearing on how much pressure he is under here.

Heta was a rare bright spot for us yesterday. He did what he should have done and thrashed the local qualifier 6-0. It was a good performance, not allowing himself to get dragged down and he just wrapped it up in double quick time.

Step Up

This is a different kettle of fish. Van Veen is no local qualifier. He is a young man with a massive talent, and on a mission. A win here could/should land him a place at the Grand Prix with all the guaranteed ranking prizemoney that brings. He has already reached a couple of Euro Tour quarter finals so he knows the ropes.

No H2H record to go on but Heta came into this event having lost six of his last ten matches and Van Veen has been in better form. Van Veen is the marginal favourite with most firms and his best odds are 1.91 joint favourite with Ladbrokes. He is worth supporting at those odds.

Sunday Hungarian Darts Trophy tips: 1 point Gian Van Veen to win @ 1.91 with Ladbrokes

Mike de Decker vs. Michael Smith

De Decker ended our hopes of a payout with Josh Rock by beating the Ulsterman 6-1. It is fair to say Rock had a bit of a stinker, with just 12.5% on the doubles. There were no 180s hit, so at least I dodged one bullet yesterday.

Bully Boy beat De Sousa 6-4 in a poor game of darts. Both players averaged under 90 and Smith was left with nothing much to say other than he is playing great in practice but is struggling on stage.

Is it the new supplier? Is he not really getting on with his new darts? I would say that his form has dipped since the switch, but he hasn’t gone into a Peter Wright style decline.

No H2H data to go on but it is hard to get enthusiastic about odds of just 1.36 about Smith winning. De Decker is a capable player, arguably he should have achieved more than he has done, and his odds of 3.60 are tempting.

If Smith plays like he did yesterday, he won’t win, but surely he can’t be that bad again? I’ll have a play on the handicap and hope that De Decker can make a game of it at the very least.

Sunday Hungarian Darts Trophy tips: 1 point Mike de Decker to win +2.5 legs @ 1.80 with Fitzdares

Scott Williams vs. Danny Noppert

Noppert was taken to a deciding leg by the impressive young Swede Ostlund yesterday afternoon. It was a weird match with Noppert averaging eleven points more than the Swede, but he couldn’t shake him off and it needed a 14 dart leg to seal the deal. There was little wrong with Noppert’s game and he is the 1.53 favourite here.

Williams is a mercurial player. When he is good, he is very good and he has the ability to get under the skin of opponents without being a prat. He doesn’t lack for self-confidence and there is a bit of a clash of styles here.

He beat Dirk van Duijvenbode 6-3 yesterday in what was a blood bath afternoon session for the seeds. Williams was able to live with Dirk’s firepower and was much better on the doubles and eventually Dirk imploded. Noppert doesn’t tend to implode quite like Dirk and he may very well grind out another narrow win.

Williams is the 2.50 outsider and while that is tempting, it’s not quite enough for me and I’ll sit this one out.

Jonny Clayton vs. Michael van Gerwen

This is an interesting clash. I can remember that their H2H record is very close, 20-17 to MVG rings a bell. Clayton has been a thorn in MVG’s side quite a few times.

The Ferret is returning to form after his bereavement and he is starting to play more like his old self. He really should have lost to Wattimena last night. He struggles against Wattimena for some reason and the Dutchman missed no less than six match darts. Clayton played OK and was good on the doubles.

Van Gerwen controlled his match with Ross Smith but from 5-2 up, he let Smith back in to make it 5-4 but a 14 dart leg was enough to win 6-4. Both players averaged 98, and it was a decent match.

Clayton hasn’t shown any really good form since the Matchplay but he is close to finding that top gear. He is not under any pressure here and he can relax and just have a go a beating the 1.44 favourite.

He could do it, but I’d prefer to have seen stronger performances before putting any money on him. No bet.

Dave Chisnall vs. Rowby-John Rodriguez

Rowby-John hasn’t impressed much in his two matches so far. He hasn’t been in good form this year and reaching the third round is a bit of a bonus.

Dave Chisnall was solid when beating Scott Mitchell 6-2. He averaged 96 and it was a nice opening match for him. He is now faced with another opponent who he should beat.

Chizzy is the 1.30 favourite with Rodriguez a 4.00 shot. That looks about right, but Chizzy came into this tournament having lost five of his last six matches. Not great form in other words and he looks a bit short perhaps.

Rodriguez has a puncher’s chance and he has got a good A game. Thre are worse bets around, but I’ll sit this one out.
