Thursday Evening PDC World Championship Preview
Just the one winner for James Punt this afternoon, he’s hoping for more tonight. His Thursday Evening PDC World Championship preview and tips are below.
Gary Anderson vs. Madars Razma
This a repeat of the 2021 championship second round match which Anderson won 3-1. They have only played once since and it was Razma who won that 6-2 in July.
Many have written Anderson off and not without some reason. His win rate in 2022 is just 51% and that is not sustainable for a player hoping to remain in the elite group. On the plus side, Anderson’s seasonal average is 95.8, making him the 12th highest which is not too shabby. His record at Ally Pally is right up with the very best of the current players. He has only failed to reach the third round once and that was on debut in 2010.
Poor Ally Pally Record
Razma, on the other hand, has not reached the third round in his three appearances. His 12 month average is under 90. He has lost six of his last ten matches and in those ten, he has managed just three 90+ averages. Madars does have a decent A game, he has hit four 9 darters, he can be deadly on treble 19 and he tries his best, but he is a fairly ordinary player who make the most of what he has got.
He is also a very deliberate player. He takes his time at the oche and that winds Anderson up. Even after all this time at the top, Anderson still lets himself get wound up by players that don’t throw at his preferred pace.
If this match was a regular pro tour match, or even any other major, you can see Razma having a chance to win, but at Ally Pally? This is Anderson’s cash machine.
Anderson is the 1.31 favourite and 3.95 shot Razma is traying to do what no one else has manged to do, beat Anderson in a second round match. Thirteen wins at this stage and of the last ten, all have been won 3-0 or 3-1.
Thursday Evening PDC World Championship Tip: 2 points Gary Anderson to win -1.5 sets @ 1.73 with Ladbrokes
James Wade vs. Jim Williams
James Wade comes here in good form, having won the final players championship event of the year in early November. Since then, he has played four matches and lost two. His scoring remains light for one of the elite players but he ranks 3rd for checkout %. He has played in 18 previous PDC World Championships and only failed to reach the third round five times and only once in the last seven years.
Williams beat young Sebastian Bialecki 3-2 in the first round and had to come from behind twice. It was a decent performance, and it should have settled him into the tournament. He has only played in one PDC World Championship and lost at this stage to Joe Cullen, 2-3. His recent form sees five wins in his last ten matches, a mixed bunch of results and not very consistent.
Even H2H
They have only met twice before, and it is one win each. Both have been close and 9-10 in combined legs. Williams won their only TV match in the 2021 Grand Slam, winning 5-4.
Wade has only lost two of his seventeen last 64 round matches and only won two 3-2. Williams is savvy enough to get something out of the game but Wade should win again.
Wade is the 1.44 favourite with Williams 2.90. I’ll take Wade on the handicap.
Thursday Evening PDC World Championship Tip: 1 point Wade to win -1.5 sets @ 1.95 with Ladbrokes
Luke Humphries vs. Florian Hempel
Humphries has generally gone well here in his five previous visits, reaching three quarter finals. His recent form is good with seven wins from his last ten matches. After having a good season and becoming a dad, he is kicking on and is many peoples’ fancy as a dark(ish) horse to win the title.
Hempel beat Keegan Brown 3-2 in the first round. It was a very close match and was won in the deciding leg of the deciding set. He showed good composure if not devastating scoring. He has won seven of his last ten matches and is playing decent stuff.
Humphries is the better player but Hempel can pull a big performance out of the bag, as he did here last year, beating Dimitri van den Bergh 3-1 at this stage, averaging 98.
Humphries is the 1.18 favourite and he should win, but I’m not seeing any good bets.
Thursday Evening PDC World Championship Tip: No Bet
Vincent van der Voort vs. Cameron Menzies
Vincent van der Voort has played in 15 previous World Championships and reached the third round nine times, and four times in the last five years. He isn’t a player who wins titles, but he does farm money very well. His recent form is not good, losing six of his last ten matches.
Cameron Menzies beat Diogo Portela 3-1 in the first round. It wasn’t a great performance but at least he didn’t fall over. It was his sixth win in his last ten, but you don’t really know what you are going get with him. He can be very good, or dreadful. One concern is that this will be the last match on, and will he be able to stay on the right side of pissed? He was a bit glassy eyed the other night and he is up against a better player tonight.
Even Stevens
These two have met twice before and it is one win each. There is nothing between them scoring wise, but Menzies is the better player in terms of statistical metrics. He just hasn’t achieved as much as Van der Voort due to a lack of application.
Van der Voort is the 1.86 favourite, Menzies 2.04. The head says that Vincent’s experience is the deciding factor, but the fact that he has lost five of his last six matches makes him hard to fancy at odds on. Maybe a bet in running if Cameron turns up half cut. No bet.
