Tuesday Night 2023 PDC World Championship Preview
After another exciting afternoon at the Ally Pally, the action continues this evening. We have three more 3rd round ties and James Punt has previewed all of them. Check out his Tuesday Night 2023 PDC World Championship tips below.
Jim Williams vs. Gabriel Clemens
There have been very few shock results in this year’s championship, but one of the few, and the biggest, was Jim Williams defeat of James Wade. Only three seeds failed to win their opening matches and Wade was by far the highest ranked. It was a fairly ordinary match with both players averaging just over 90.
Gabriel Clemens came into the event in poor form, but he had a comprehensive 3-0 win over William 0’Connor, averaging 95.6. He hasn’t enjoyed much success on TV in 2022, losing seven of his ten matches, but his win over O’Connor was his second best performance of the year, on TV. Clemens has played two 3rd round matches here, beating Peter Wright 4-3 in 2020 but losing 0-4 to Clayton last year.
Good Finisher
Jim Williams’ seasonal average is a little higher than Clemens’ and his recent form sees five wins from his last ten, compared to just four for Clemens. This will be his first 3rd round match at Ally Pally, having lost at the second round stage last year. He is not known as a really heavy scorer, but he is a very good finisher, ranked 19th for checkout % for the last 12 months.
If he can stay with Clemens, he should be able to take his chances and if Clemens struggles, Williams is well placed to take advantage. His last three matches on this stage have gone to a deciding set.
Injury Worry
Clemens is said to have been carrying an injury for a while but is now on the mend and playing pain free. If this has been the cause of his struggles this year, then he may be about to hit some better form.
There is no H2H form to go on and it is a hard match to call. The market is having difficulty separating them with Clemens the favourite at 1.85 and Williams 2.00. Over 5.5 sets makes sense but is only 1.62 and I will be greedy and go for a deciding set. Williams can be hard to shake off with his good doubling and I am still not convinced Clemens is good enough, or confident enough, to dominate.

Gerwyn Price vs. Raymond van Barneveld
The main attraction of the night. We saw these two play each other twice at the Grand Slam and it was Barney who won both. Those results extended an already strong H2H record against the Welshman. Can he do it again?
The general consensus is no. The longer format will suit Prices and so on. I have to disagree. It is not as if Barney is new to playing long format matches and he is no stranger to this stage.
H2H Advantage Barney
The H2H stats show an 8-2 advantage for Barney, with one Premier League draw. In 2022 it is 3-0. Barney has won seven of their last nine matches and on TV it is 5-0 with 1 draw. That is a comprehensive record. RVB is Price’s bogeyman. Of players who he has played more than twice, his record vs. Van Barneveld is his worst. Worse than vs. MVG, Peter Wright, Michael Smith and so on.
Yes, Barney is getting on a bit now and he has diabetes which can make long matches a chore, but their recent Grand Slam quarter final was a first to 16 leg format Barney winning 16-13. Price averaged 101. 78 in that match, so his A game wasn’t enough, and the match was hardly a sprint. Price knows that Barney Loves playing him and that he is right up against it….again.
There is no need to say much more.

Peter Wright vs. Kim Huybrechts
It seems like a long time ago since we saw Peter Wright in his Grinch costume, beating Mickey Mansell 3-0. He only averaged 88.34, but that is standard fare for a first round match. The last time Wright was the defending champion, he lost at this stage, 3-4 to Gabriel Clemens.
Overall he has played nine 3rd round matches here and won six. Wright has won six of his last ten matches and three of his last four have seen sub 90 averages. There has to be a disclaimer that he lost form while his wife was in hospital with post operative complications. That situation has been resolved and we should see the real Peter Wright, but it’s been a while since he has been playing his best.
Plenty Of Past Form
Wrights H2H record against Huybrechts is a long one and he leads 21-13. In 2022 it is 1-1 and Kim has won three of their last four. On TV Wright is 7-1 in their last eight. Most of that form is stale but it is 3-2 to Kim since the start of 2020 and they were all short matches. Wright won their only TV match 2-0 at the Grand Prix this year.
Huybrechts has played eight 3rd round matches here and won five. His recent form sees five wins from his last ten and we haven’t seen him hit many big averages, with just two in the last six months. He is still a trier and will give it his best shot, but he is likely to need Wright to play poorly if he is to have a chance.
Wright is the 1.20 favourite and Huybrechts 4.75. It is hard to see any value in this match. No bet.
