2019 Melbourne Cup Tip and Preview

We finished off with a trio of nice places and a winner on Saturday at the Breeders’ Cup. Dawn The Destroyer got us off to a nice start, staying on from the back for 3rd advised e/w at 20/1. Stormy Liberal faded late after showing up well for a long way. Giant Expectations was heavily eased and didn’t give his running in the Dirt Mile. Whitmore ran a lovely race for us, grabbing 3rd advised at 20/1 but we saved the best until last. Bricks and Mortar (advised win @2/1) beat United (advised e/w @ 80/1) in a photo in the Turf Classic. The race that stops a nation takes place in the early hours of Tuesday morning. Check out Dave Stevos’ 2019 Melbourne Cup tip and preview below…

2019 Melbourne Cup Tip: 4.00am Handicap (Group 1)

The Melbourne Cup is run at Flemington tonight and there is a big European challenge. Last year’s hero Cross Counter is back to defend his crown, but he has to carry top weight. His form was as good as ever this season though and he ran some big races in defeat behind Stradivarius and Search For A Song at the highest level. He is a proper Group 1 horse and the way he stayed on last time at the Curragh was very encouraging (14f gd/fm). 12/1 looks a more than fair price for the son of Teofilo and Cross Counter cannot be discounted.

Japanese raider Mer De Glace showed a smart turn of foot to land the Caulfield Cup last time. That was over 12f on good ground, but he has to prove his stamina for 2 miles. Finche races off the same weight as when a fine 4th in this last year and he is weighted to beat Cross Counter this time around. Constantinople tackles 2 miles for the first time and on his previous form the jury is out on whether he will stay. However, the one I like at a nice each way price is Ebor winner Mustajeer.

Mustajeer Overpriced

This son of Medicean was a very impressive winner of the Ebor off a mark of 108 (14f gd/fm). Formerly trained by Ger Lyons in Ireland, he was sold to Australia after that win. Now he is trained by Aussie handler Kriss Lees and Damien Oliver will ride. He was on board this fella in the Caufield Cup when he flew home after meeting trouble in running coming round the home turn.

Mustajeer travelled strongly in that race and he was closing on the leaders all the way to the line. The 12f trip was probably sharp enough for him and the step back up in trip looks sure to suit. Mustajeer carries just 8st 9lbs, 10lb less than he had on his back at York. He has a nice draw in stall 6, rain won’t worry him and this 2 mile trip could really suit him. At odds of 18/1 with 6 places e/w available, Mustajeer is our 2019 Melbourne Cup tip.

MELBORUNE CUP TIP: MUSTAJEER E/W @ 18/1 WILLIAM HILL (6 PLACES)
