2022 Glorious Goodwood Thursday Preview

It was a truly Glorious Day for us at Goodwood on Day 2. Not only did we avoid a blank, we got a place and we also got a winner! Luminous Light was the only let down. Trillium looked a special filly, hacking up advised at odds of 10/1. Value Theory got up for 3rd too at 12/1. Hopefully we can get another place or two on Day 3, Dave Stevos 2022 Glorious Goodwood Thursday tips are below.

1.50 – Kincsem Handicap (Class 2)

Off an effective mark of 83, surely Schmilsson is capable of making his presence felt here. By Muhaarar, Andrew Balding’s gelding started off the season with two excellent runs. A 1L 2nd in an Epsom novice (8.5f gd) on his comeback was followed with an emphatic 5.5L win over 10f in a Bath maiden. He was giving 5lbs to the runner up Mashaaer and he ran a blinder in a Royal Ascot handicap off 96 on his next start.

Schmilsson also headed to Royal Ascot next time out but he finished well beat off 92 over 12f. It was a similar story next time back at 10f at Newmarket. The handicapper has now dropped him to 88 and talented claimer Callum Hutchinson takes off another 5lbs. It can take horses a couple of runs to get used to the hustle and bustle of these big handicaps and I am hoping that Schmilsson has learned plenty from those first two tries. On that Bath run he looks potentially very well handicapped. With his pilot’s claim further easing his burden, at 28/1 he is the e/w selection.

2022 Glorious Goodwood Thursday Tips: Schmilsson e/w @ 28/1 (5 places)

2.25 – Richmond Stakes (Group 2)

Another fascinating race for the Juveniles, this time over 6f. Royal Scotsman ran a blinder at the Royal Meeting behind Bradsell in the G2 Coventry. The Coles’ charge won his maiden in fine style over C&D on his second start and having previous course experience around here is huge, especially for these young horses. 7/4 looks a more than fair price and he is definitely the one to beat.

Chateau steps up from Listed company after two excellent efforts at that level. He finished a good 4th behind Little Big Bear in the Windsor Castle and then landed a Listed contest at Newbury by 1L last time. On the figures he hasn’t got a huge amount to find with the fav but he will need to improve further if he is to beat him.

Bay Too Big

At odds of 14/1, Bluelight Bay looks a tad too big. By a quality sire in Exceed and Excel, Eve Johnson Houghton’s colt got off the mark at Windsor last time (6f gd/fm). On debut he ran in the maiden won by Flying Scotsman and he came home in 2nd, 5L behind the winner. Royal Scotsman had the benefit of a previous run that day and I think that Bluelight Bay could get a lot closer, especially on the quicker ground they’ll be running on tomorrow. The 2nd and 4th from his Windsor win have both won since so there is substance to the form and at odds of 14/1, he is the e/w pick.

2022 Glorious Goodwood Thursday Tips: Bluelight Bay e/w @ 14/1 nap

3.00 – Gordon Stakes (Group 3)

An intriguing Group 3 for the 3yos. New London, a handicap winner last time out, is 15/8. He was previously defeated in a G3 on his second run of the season at Chester (12f sft). By Dubawi, his dam is a half to the dam of Arc hero Waldgeist and also to Leger winner Masked Marvel so you would imagine he should stay 12f no problem. It was a very impressive win last time at Newmarket but I wouldn’t be lumping on a horse at 15/8 who was well beaten on his last try in stakes company.

The one that looks overpriced dropping back in trip is Derby 4th Masekela. Jason Watson takes over in the plate after a disappointing effort last time behind Deauville Legend at Newmarket (13f gd/fm). He was beat 7L but he was far too keen trying the longest trip he’s faced to date. Unsurprisingly, he didn’t get home.

The drop back in distance will suit him well. With Al Qareem and West Wind Blows likely to take them along at an honest gallop, hopefully he will settle better. Hoo Ya Mal finished ahead of Westover in the Derby and he is the one to beat if he repeats that. Masekela has 6L to find on that Derby run but this is a very different track with different characteristics and at odds of 16/1, hopefully Masekela can finish a lot closer to Hoo Ya Mal this time.

2022 Glorious Goodwood Thursday Tips: Masekela e/w @ 16/1

3.35 – Nassau Stakes (Group 1)

We backed Aristia in the G2 Middleton at York at big odds back in May and she ran a blinder in 2nd. She had Thunder Kiss over 2L back in 3rd and she has since run a huge race to be placed in the G1 Pretty Polly, beat just 2.75L. At Ascot she didn’t back that run up dropped into Listed company. However, I just don’t think the stiff test at Ascot suited her. Her best runs by far have come at York, a much easier test.

Last season she beat Alpine Star at York over 10f, seriously good form. Her conqueror at York this season, Lilac Road, re-opposes here and given that there was only 0.5L between them, it’s pretty mad that she is 7/1 and the Hannon horse is as big as 33/1. My hope is that Aristia gets away fast and nicks an easy lead. On a fast track like Goodwood, she might just hang on for a place at least. At odds of 33/1, Aristia is the e/w selection.

2022 Glorious Goodwood Thursday Tips: Aristia e/w @ 33/1 nb

4.10 – Nursery Handicap (Class 2)

Mark Johnston had a quiet day on Wednesday but hopefully he can get back on the winning trail here. He won this race in 2014, 2016 and 2019 and he fires two bullets here. True Statesman is the mount of Ryan Moore and he does look the most obvious one. He is on a hat trick after a Novice win at Chelmsford (6f) and a nursery win at Chester (7f gd). The handicapper took a dim view of that facile win off 83 and he now has to cope with an 8lb rise to 91. He’ll need to improve another chunk to make hay off that mark.

Franny Norton gets the leg up on the other Johnston horse, Centre Court. She won an ordinary Newmarket maiden on debut before going down by 1.5L under a penalty in a Chelmsford novice. Now, she makes her handicap debut off a mark of 77 and she returns from a 2 month break. On pedigree this extra furlong should suit and it wouldn’t be the first time a Johnston ‘second string’ outperformed a shorter priced stablemate. She isn’t one to be having the farm on but at 14/1, a small e/w interest is advised.

2022 Glorious Goodwood Thursday Tips: Centre Court e/w @ 14/1
