2023 Grand National Runner-by-Runner Guide

This Saturday the greatest steeplechase race on planet Earth is due to be run at Aintree. 40 horses, a 4m 2f trip and 30 fences, it is a contest where anything can, and usually does, happen. Our racing analyst Dave Stevos landed a lovely place at 40/1 with Dolcita in the Irish version, check out his 2023 Grand National Runner-by-Runner Guide below.

1. Any Second Now

Trainer: Ted Walsh Jockey: Mark Walsh

Odds: 14/1

Has to carry a welter burden but probably deserves to. A very unlucky 3rd in this race two years ago when badly hampered. Last year beat all bar Noble Yeats off a mark of 159. 8lbs higher this time and he’s now an 11yo but I was in Navan to see him win over 20f on heavy last month and when he came back in, you wouldn’t have known he had run in a race. He is a big, strong stayer who loves this C&D and he has huge claims.

2023 Grand National Runner-by-Runner Rating: 10/10

2. Noble Yeats

Trainer: Emmett Mullins Jockey: Sean Bowen

Odds: 8/1

The defending champ returns to try and retain his crown but it is going to be a lot harder this time. Won the race as a novice last year, beating Any Second Now by 2.25L off a mark of 147. Pulled up on his first run back this season but then landed successive races at Wexford and a G2 here. Warmed up for this with a staying on 4th in the Gold Cup at Cheltenham and we know he relishes this trip and track. However, he is 20lbs higher than 2022 and he might struggle to uphold form with Any Second Now. Each way claims but winning may prove beyond him.

2023 Grand National Runner-by-Runner Rating: 7/10

3. Galvin

Trainer: Gordon Elliott Jockey: Davy Russell

Odds: 20/1

An out and out stayer who chased home Delta Work in the X Country at Cheltenham (30f sft). Has 2.5L to find with that rival yet is 7lbs worse off at the weights. A slow horse that should be well suited by this marathon trip but is he good enough to win off 166? I’m not too sure. The once retired Davy Russell, fresh from a nightmarish Cheltenham, is booked. Has he still got the desire (and the bottle) required to compete at this level? We’ll find out this weekend. Minor place claims at best.

2023 Grand National Runner-by-Runner Rating: 5/10

4. Fury Road

Trainer: Gordon Elliott Jockey: Jonjo O’Neill Jr

Odds: 66/1

Michael O’Leary has booked Jonjo O’Neill Jr for the ride aboard this Gordon Elliott trained 9yo. A son of Stowaway, he’ll sport a tongue tie and cheekpieces. Solid Aintree form in the book having chased home Ahoy Senor in a G1 Novice here last season. Never raced beyond 25f so trip is an unknown. If there is good in the ground description it will help him stay the distance but this is a big ask off a mark of 161.

2023 Grand National Runner-by-Runner Rating: 3/10

5. The Big Dog

Trainer: Peter Fahey Jockey: Aidan Coleman

Odds: 25/1

Fascinating contender for Peter Fahey. Usual partner Keith Donoghue rides Delta Work so Aidan Coleman picks up a lovely spare. He was on board when this horse ran a cracker in the Welsh National over the Christmas period. In the process of running huge at the Dublin Racing Festival when falling two out. In off a mark of 160 but if he had completed at Leopardstown, he’d probably be six or seven pounds higher. He has form at 28f/30f but this drying ground is a big concern. If there is enough moisture in it, he could run massive. Shortlisted.

2023 Grand National Runner-by-Runner Rating: 9/10

6. Capodanno

Trainer: Willie Mullins Jockey: Danny Mullins

Odds: 20/1

Seven year old son of Manduro who will be ridden by Danny Mullins. That would suggest he’s Willie’s second string so he must be expecting a bold showing. Has won on very testing ground but career best arguably came when winning the G1 Novice at Punchestown last season on nicer ground (24f gd/yld). Seen just once since when well beat behind Janidil at Gowran in February (20f sft/hvy). This trip poses huge question marks and he carries plenty of weight. If he stays, he could go well, but that is a big if.

2023 Grand National Runner-by-Runner Rating: 5/10

7. Delta Work

Trainer: Gordon Elliott Jockey: Keith Donoghue

Odds: 10/1

Has charted a similar course to connections’ previous two time winner Tiger Roll. Ran very well in this race last year off 160 to finish 3rd but he was 22L behind Noble Yeats (and 20L behind Any Second Now). Just 1lb lower this year and the question is whether that will be enough to close the gap. Better off at the weights with Galvin compared to their X-Country meeting in March so should be beating him. Keith Donoghue retains the ride and he looks the main hope for Gigginstown and Gordon Elliott. Should be in the money.

2023 Grand National Runner-by-Runner Rating: 8/10

8. Sam Brown

Trainer: Anthony Honeyball Jockey: Jonathan Burke

Odds: 80/1

Ominous that Aidan Coleman has abandoned ship. Anthony Honeyball has drafted in Jonathan Burke as a replacement and he’ll be hoping that a recent wind procedure sparks a return to form for his 11yo son of Black Sam Bellamy. On the plus side, he hacked up at this meeting over 24f last season and the ground should suit him. This will be his first start in a handicap chase since that Aintree win last April and despite his age, he is relatively unexposed at marathon trips on half decent ground. A bold run wouldn’t come as a huge surprise but doubtful he’s up to winning.

2023 Grand National Runner-by-Runner Rating: 6/10

9. Lifetime Ambition

Trainer: Jessica Harrington Jockey: Sean O’Keefe

Odds: 25/1

Jessie Harrington’s 8yo son of Kapgarde is a prominent racer, often an advantage in the Grand National. However, he has to rate a doubtful stayer if it comes up soft. Had the run of the race in the Troytown at Navan in November and was no match for The Big Dog. Is 3llbs worse off with him for a 3.5L defeat, it’ll be tough to turn that around. If the ground is good to soft or quicker it will enhance his prospects but it looks to me that the handicapper has him exactly where he wants him. Minor place claims if the weather is in his favour.

2023 Grand National Runner-by-Runner Rating: 6/10

10. Carefully Selected

Trainer: Willie Mullins Jockey: Michael O’Sullivan

Odds: 50/1

The man of the moment, Michael O’Sullivan, gets the leg up on this 11yo son of Well Chosen. This horse won the Thyestes in January under Paul Townend so it has to be concerning that he has jumped ship. 9lbs higher than he was at Gowran and the more rain that falls, the better his chance will be. Shaped as though this sort of test might suit at Cheltenham in 2020 (30f sft) but didn’t exactly look like he was crying out for further when winning the Thyestes. Needs the heavens to open.

2023 Grand National Runner-by-Runner Rating: 5/10

11. Coko Beach

Trainer: Gordon Elliott Jockey: Harry Cobden

Odds: 33/1

8yo grey son of Cokoriko who loves a slog. Thyestes winner in 2021 off 138 and ran respectably on better ground in the 2021 Irish National off 150. Struggled last season but slowly been working back to top form this term. Ran well in both the Thyestes and Troytown before hacking up at Punchestown last time out (28f yld). Versatile regarding ground and loves the hustle and bustle of big field handicaps. Probably doesn’t have a huge amount in hand but a nice spare for Harry Cobden and should run a solid race.

2023 Grand National Runner-by-Runner Rating: 6/10

12. Longhouse Poet

Trainer: Martin Brassil Jockey: JJ Slevin

Odds: 14/1

Martin Brassil knows what it takes to win this race and this son of Yeats has been well backed. Same mark as when 6th, beaten 34L last season. Was in receipt of 5lbs from Roi Mage when beating that rival at Down Royal (26f sft) last month. Will need to improve massively on that to feature here and may just be a bit high in the weights. His course experience should stand to him but there is better value to be found elsewhere.

2023 Grand National Runner-by-Runner Rating: 6/10

13. Gaillard Du Mesnil

Trainer: Willie Mullins Jockey: Paul Townend

Odds: 14/1

The choice of stable jockey Paul Townend. Landed the G2 Novice at Cheltenham (30f sft) and looked like he’d stay even further. Ran a cracker in last year’s Irish Grand National behind Lord Lariat, finishing 3rd off 154. Is only a pound higher here and there could be more to come from this 7yo over this marathon distance. Won a G1 easily at Leopardstown’s Xmas meeting (24f sft) and could be well treated. However, drying conditions would be a worry as all his best form is on soft. If he gets his ground, he has big claims.

2023 Grand National Runner-by-Runner Rating: 8/10

14. Darasso

Trainer: Joseph O’Brien Jockey: Luke Dempsey

Odds: 80/1

Luke Dempsey has been on board this 10y son of Konig Turf the last twice and he keeps the ride. Joseph O’Brien’s charge won a Listed heat at Thurles (22f yld) back in December. Two runs since well below par and never won at further than 22f. Did look like he might stay further than 3 miles when 3rd in the Kerry National in September at Listowel (24f gd) and his best chance of getting this trip is on good to soft ground or faster. Hard to think he’s well handicapped though and a top 10 finish would represent a good run.

2023 Grand National Runner-by-Runner Rating: 5/10

15. Le Milos

Trainer: Dan Skelton Jockey: Harry Skelton

Odds: 14/1

The shortest priced UK based horse in the race. Dan and Harry Skelton have had plenty of big days this season and they’ll be hoping this 8yo can provide them with a win in the biggest race of all. Won both his first two starts this season, off 142 at Bangor (24f hvy) and then off 146 at Newbury (26f gd). Satisfactory prep run when runner up at Kelso 23.5f gd/sft) but mark is now up to 152 and he lacks Aintree form. His versatility when it comes to the ground is a plus but a big career best will be needed. Decent place chance but will need to improve to win.

2023 Grand National Runner-by-Runner Rating: 7/10

16. Escaria Ten

Trainer: Gordon Elliott Jockey: Adrian Heskin

Odds: 100/1

Another one for Gordon Elliott and Adrian Heskin rides. Best run this term came at Thurles when beat 2L by Darasso (26f yld). Ran respectably in the Thyestes (25f hvy) without ever threatening and was beaten 75 lengths despite finishing 9th in last year’s Grand National. He is only a pound lower now and he is hard to make a case for.

2023 Grand National Runner-by-Runner Rating: 2/10

17. The Big Breakaway

Trainer: Joe Tizzard Jockey: Brendan Powell

Odds: 33/1

Joe Tizzard’s 8yo son of Getaway proved his credentials for this race with a superb effort in the Welsh National in December (30.5f sft). Stayed on well that day and the extra distance here should pose no problems. Handicapper generously only raised him 3lbs for that Chepstow run so he is decently treated. Had The Big Dog behind in the Welsh National and he is 8lbs better off with him now. Pulled up in the Ultima though and connections now reach for blinkers. If he rediscovers his Welsh National form, he could go well.

2023 Grand National Runner-by-Runner Rating: 7/10

18. Cape Gentleman

Trainer: Shark Hanlon Jockey: Jody McGarvey

Odds: 150/1

The Shark has had a fine season and he relies on Cape Gentleman here. Jody McGarvey rides the 7yo son of Champs Elysees and his best recent run came when he fell at the last in the Kerry National (24f gd). Well beat behind Velvet Elvis at Fairyhouse (23.5f yld) when last seen and has never won at further than 20f. Drying ground will help but he looks to be up against it.

2023 Grand National Runner-by-Runner Rating: 2/10

19. Roi Mage

Trainer: Pat Griffin Jockey: Felix De Giles

Odds: 50/1

Backed into 50s from 100s earlier this week. Trained by Pat Griffin, Felix De Giles will ride this 11yo son of Poliglote. Pleasing prep run at Down Royal when beat just 1.25L by Longhouse Poet and he is 11lbs better off with that rival now. Best run came in the 2019 French National at Auteuil (30f vry sft) when running on well for 3rd. This extreme trip could really suit this horse but connections would probably like to see more rain. However, he has won on good to soft in France and he could sneak into the extra places if putting in a clear round.

2023 Grand National Runner-by-Runner Rating: 6/10

20. Diol Ker

Trainer: Noel Meade Jockey: Kieren Buckley

Odds: 80/1

Grand staying chaser who went agonisingly close in the Paddy Power at Leopardstown (24f yld) off 145 in December. His last three wins have come on heavy so the conditions have to be a big worry for Noel Meade’s charge. Kieren Buckley has been on board the last twice and he retains the ride. Races off the same mark as at Leopardstown so fairly handicapped but never won beyond 3 miles and has looked a non-stayer when he has tried further. Outsider.

2023 Grand National Runner-by-Runner Rating: 1/10

21. A Wave Of The Sea

Trainer: Joseph O’Brien Jockey: Shane Fitzgerald

Odds: 100/1

Versatile 7yo son of Born To Sea whose best form has come over 17f at Leopardstown. Has won over 20f and been placed over 24f but this trip has to rate as a big worry. Ran well at his favourite track in February but not much encouragement to take from his lifeless effort at Cheltenham last time. Shane Fitzgerald was on board when he finished down the field over 24f at Leopardstown in December and he’s back on board here. A similar fate could await today.

2023 Grand National Runner-by-Runner Rating: 1/10

22. Minella Trump

Trainer: Donald McCain Jockey: Theo Gillard

Odds: 66/1

We have already backed this horse at 66/1 (read why here). It looks like the weather has come in his favour and after getting a sighter on him over hurdles last time out, Theo Gillard keeps the ride. The 9yo son of Shantou looks an ideal type for this race and he’s only 2lbs higher than when winning at Perth on his last chase start (24f gd). Once the ground keeps drying out, Minella Trump is more than capable of outrunning his odds.

2023 Grand National Runner-by-Runner Rating: 7/10

23. Vanillier

Trainer: Gavin Cromwell Jockey: Sean Flanagan

Odds: 20/1

The 2021 Albert Bartlett winner at Cheltenham (24f gd/sft). Only won one race since, a 22f G2 Novice Chase at Punchestown in November 2021. Lost his way subsequently but showed clear signs of a revival when pushing Kemboy all the way in a 25f Grade 3 at Fairyhouse on his last start. Was well beaten over the furthest trip he’s tried to date behind Stattler at Cheltenham in 2022 and he looks too short in the betting considering how many questions he has to answer.

2023 Grand National Runner-by-Runner Rating: 4/10

24. Velvet Elvis

Trainer: Tom Gibney Jockey: Darragh O’Keefe

Odds: 40/1

Hails from a shrewd yard that landed the Irish National a few years ago. Looked like he had lost his form on his first three runs of this campaign for Tom Gibney but back on top form the last twice. Beat Minella Crooner by 3.5L at Fairyhouse (24f yld) in February and chased home Any Second Now off unfavourable terms at Navan last time (20f hvy). Now a stone better off with that rival for a 7L defeat but the trip is a worry. Finished weakly over 29f in last year’s Irish National and it might be a similar story here. Darragh O’Keefe keeps the faith.

2023 Grand National Runner-by-Runner Rating: 4/10

25. Ain’t That A Shame

Trainer: Henry De Bromhead Jockey: Rachael Blackmore

Odds: 20/1

De Bromhead and Blackmore teamed up to win this with Minella Times in 2021 and they’ll be hoping to repeat the trick with this 9yo son of Jeremy. Ran The Big Dog mightily close off 137 in the Munster National (24f sft) in October when he was probably outstayed. Ran another blinder in the Paddy Power off 7lbs higher and then warmed up for this with a facile win at Gowran (20f sft/hvy). Never raced on good ground and done all his winning on heavy so that’s a big negative. The trip is concerning too. No appeal at the prices.

2023 Grand National Runner-by-Runner Rating: 3/10

26. Corach Rambler

Trainer: Lucinda Russell Jockey: Derek Fox

Odds: 7/1

Dual Ultima winner at the Cheltenham Festival for Lucinda Russell and Derek Fox. Stayed on dourly to edge out Fastorslow off 146 in that race last time and gets in here off 10lbs lower than his current mark. Hacked up over 25f on his sole Aintree start but his will be his first try over the National fences. The big worry with this horse is his run style. He tends to get behind in his races and in a race like this, that means he’ll need a huge amount of luck avoiding fallers etc. Favourites have a poor record in the Grand National and his jockey has been out injured recently. No value left in his odds but if avoids trouble should be staying on at the finish.

2023 Grand National Runner-by-Runner Rating: 6/10

27. Enjoy D’Allen

Trainer: Ciaran Murphy Jockey: Simon Torrens

Odds: 80/1

The second outsider we have already backed ante-post. Was well fancied coming into this last year but unseated after jumping the first. Obviously been targeted at this race again since running on late for 9th in the Irish National. His jumping was poor that day but it was a lot better on his last handicap chase start at Leopardstown. Simon Torrens had a spin on him in a G3 at Fairyhouse last time and this trip could bring out the best in him. Versatile regarding ground and an interesting dark horse.

2023 Grand National Runner-by-Runner Rating: 7/10

28. Mr Incredible

Trainer: Willie Mullins Jockey: Brian Hayes

Odds: 14/1

7yo son of Westerner trained by Willie Mullins with Brian Hayes in the saddle. Has run well in big field handicaps the last twice. Beat 2.75L off 142 on heavy at Warwick in January and then a good 3rd off 145 on soft at Cheltenham. Handicapper has not applied an Irish tax but if the ground keeps on drying out it has to be a slight concern. His soft/heavy ground form is far superior to anything he has produced on better ground. The weather may just have turned against him.

2023 Grand National Runner-by-Runner Rating: 4/10

29. Mister Coffey

Trainer: Nicky Henderson Jockey: Nico De Boinville

Odds: 50/1

The sole representative from the Nicky Henderson yard and De Boinville rides. Handles most types of ground but didn’t finish off strongly behind Gaillard Du Mesnil at Cheltenham (30f sft) last time. Has at least completed over these fences before over 21f but this trip raises huge doubts. May struggle to get home.

2023 Grand National Runner-by-Runner Rating: 2/10

30. Cloudy Glen

Trainer: Venetia Williams Jockey: Charlie Deutsch

Odds: 100/1

Venetia Williams trains this 10yo son of Cloudings and Charlie Deutsch rides. Won the Ladbrokes Trophy at Newbury in November 2021 off 140, his last win. Didn’t go with any enthusiasm in the Ultima last time, a race he ran well in before. Pulled up on sole previous run at Aintree and has looked a non-stayer at 28f+. An unlikely winner, though is down to a workable mark if is on a going day.

2023 Grand National Runner-by-Runner Rating: 3/10

31. Hill Sixteen

Trainer: Sandy Thomson Jockey: Ryan Mania

Odds: 66/1

Scottish raider from the shrewd Sandy Thomson yard and former Grand National winner Ryan Mania rides. Plenty of experience over these fences and just failed to win the Becher off 136 back in 2021. Ran another good race in that contest this year and a line can be put through his last run after a break. In off 143 here, 2lbs lower than when chasing home Sounds Russian and Aye Right at Kelso in October (strong form). Was still in contention when falling late on when tackling 4 miles in the Scottish National last year and he is a very interesting outsider having his second run after a wind op.

2023 Grand National Runner-by-Runner Rating: 7/10

32. Gabbys Cross

Trainer: Henry De Bromhead Jockey: Peter Carberry

Odds: 50/1

Peter Carberry will be looking to carry on a rich family tradition in this race. He rides this 8yo son of Frammassone for Henry De Bromhead and he could prove to be a nice spare ride. Only poor run this season came in the Thyestes on bottomless ground. That was sandwiched between two fine efforts in the Paddy Power at Leopardstown (24f yld) and in the Leinster National at Naas (24.5f sft). Was doing his best work at the finish in both those races, just like he was in the Kerry National. This trip could eke out more improvement and the ground should be perfect. Shortlisted.

2023 Grand National Runner-by-Runner Rating: 8/10

33. Recite A Prayer

Trainer: Willie Mullins Jockey: TBA

Odds: 150/1

No jockey booked yet for this 8yo son of Recital which can’t be a good sign. Beat out of sight on his last two starts, including in the Becher off 144. Excellent run in the Kerry National at Listowel would give him place claims but hard to fancy on the back of his last two runs. Good ground will suit best but has it all to do to hit the frame.

2023 Grand National Runner-by-Runner Rating: 1/10

34. Eva’s Oskar

Trainer: Tim Vaughan Jockey: Alan Johns

Odds: 50/1

We backed Tim Vaughan’s 9yo son of Shirocco for the Ultima at Cheltenham but he didn’t declare. Alan Johns will ride this grey gelding and his prominent racing style is a positive in this race. Drying ground is in his favour too but the trip is the big worry. He has plenty of form at around 3 miles but when he tried 33.5f at Newcastle, he didn’t get home. Should show up well for a long way but may give best to stronger stayers late on.

2023 Grand National Runner-by-Runner Rating: 4/10

35. Our Power

Trainer: Sam Thomas Jockey: Sam Twiston Davies

Odds: 20/1

Trained by Sam Thomas, this 8yo son of Power comes into the race in fine form. He has won both starts this season, at Ascot (24f gd) off 136 and then at Kempton (24f gd) in February off 141. Prevailed by a diminishing margin at Kempton last time and didn’t get home over 26f at Cheltenham last year. Not sure this test will bring the best out of him and makes no appeal at the current prices.

2023 Grand National Runner-by-Runner Rating: 3/10

36. Dunboyne

Trainer: Gordon Elliott Jockey: Jack Tudor

Odds: 50/1

Jack Tudor takes the ride on this son of Yeats for Gordon Elliott. Just edged out by Carefully Selected in the Thyestes on bad ground at Gowran. Followed that up with a good effort on soft behind Angel’s Dawn at Cheltenham. A bog monster who needs heavy ground and he is unlikely to get his favoured conditions here. Unless the heavens open, he looks set to struggle.

2023 Grand National Runner-by-Runner Rating: 1/10

37. Francky Du Berlais

Trainer: Peter Bowen Jockey: Ben Jones

Odds: 100/1

A horse I really like. Welshman Peter Bowen trains and Ben Jones will ride. Outran his odds and rating in the X-Country before refusing at the last. Had no right to be upsides the 159 rated Delta Work and 166 rated Galvin off level weights at the second last and just got tired on the soft ground. A dual Summer Plate winner at Market Rasen on good ground, he needs those conditions to show his best. Jumped very well on his first try over these fences in the Topham last year and if the ground continues to dry out, don’t be surprised to see this horse run a big race.

2023 Grand National Runner-by-Runner Rating: 6/10

38. Fortescue

Trainer: Henry Daly Jockey: Hugh Nugent

Odds: 66/1

One of my cliff horses. We backed him last time when he stayed on past beaten horses for 5th at Haydock (28f gd/sft). Shaped very well over these fences in December when staying on strongly for 4th, 10L behind Ashdown Lad (26f gd/sft). A slow horse that can race lazily at times so the first time blinkers look a good move. If they help him concentrate better and he doesn’t get too far back in the early stages, this horse is more than capable of running on late for place money.

2023 Grand National Runner-by-Runner Rating: 7/10

39. Back On The Lash

Trainer: Martin Keighley Jockey: Adam Wedge

Odds: 50/1

A 9yo son of Malinas who is something of a Cross Country specialist. Somehow manages to sneak in here off 138, just a pound higher than he was when winning over his favourite C&D back in January. Soft ground was no good to him at the Festival in March but these conditions should suit him much better. Guaranteed to stay at least 3m 6f and should have no problem getting another 4f. No Aintree experience, which is a negative, but he is a prominent racer, he stays longer than the mother in law and he is a very lively outsider for Martin Keighley and Adam Wedge.

2023 Grand National Runner-by-Runner Rating: 8/10

40. Born By The Sea

Trainer: Paul Gilligan Jockey: Philip Enright

Odds: 100/1

We backed this horse ante-post for the Plate at Cheltenham but the weather gods conspired against him. Paul Gilligan’s former Galway Blazers winner likes decent ground and this will be his first time getting good in the description since a staying on 5th at Galway when trying to defend his Blazers crown. Philip Enright takes over in the plate and I’ve been itching to see this horse tackle a marathon trip on nice ground ever since his staying on 5th in the Kerry National in 2021. He’s wrong at the weights but this horse has a lot of ability and there’s an outside chance he’ll get this trip. If he does, a place could be within reach.

2023 Grand National Runner-by-Runner Rating: 6/10

The Verdict

As ever, the Grand National is a tricky puzzle to try and solve. However, I am finding it hard to get past the claims of the top weight, Any Second Now (14s). Ted Walsh’s stable star is an 11yo now but his Navan win proved all his ability remains and if he repeats what he did last year, he can make it third time lucky in this race. If there is enough cut in the ground, The Big Dog (25s) can give him most to think about and Delta Work should run a solid race too.

We are already on Minella Trump and Enjoy D’Allen so hopefully they both show up well. Noble Yeats may have gone too high in the handicap and if you are looking for horses that might nick extra places at huge odds, Fortescue (66s), Gabbys Cross (50s), Back On The Lash (50s) and Hill Sixteen (66s) could go well. Fingers crossed for a cracker of a race and hopefully, all horses and jockeys come back safe and sound.
