2023 Night 10 Premier League Of Darts Preview
Now, it is time for James Punt’s 2023 Night 10 Premier League of Darts preview.
Night 10 of the 2023 Premier League comes from Birmingham. Last week saw Jonny Clayton get his first PL Night win of the year and he has moved up to 5th place and three points off the play off places. Peter Wright remains rooted to the bottom of the table with just two points. There are seven weeks to go including tonight, so a lot can change.
Last week we netted a modest 0.66 point profit from the four bets, taken the YTD total to +2.06 points. No deposit on the speedboat just yet, but the feet are dry.
Michael van Gerwen vs. Chris Dobey
The last time these two met in the Premier League Chris Dobey was the unlikely 6-0 winner. Last week MVG drew a blank, losing his first round match 5-6 to Jonny Clayton. He averaged just 89 in that match and was very poor. He was spraying the darts about like a pub player and it was remarkable that he won five legs.
Van Gerwen started very slowly in week eight as well, just about beating Peter Wright 6-5. Last weekend, MVG made the final of the International Darts Open but lost that 4-8 to Gerwyn Price. He has won six of his last ten matches and his last five defeats have been at the hands of Welshmen. That must be some kind of record.
Dobey Needs Results
Chris Dobey is still hanging in there, but he needs another decent run to keep hanging in. He is five points off the play offs and has only picked up five points in the last eight nights. His recent form overall is not good, losing six of his last ten matches. He had endured a hard few weeks with a lot of travelling between the UK and Germany and back twice in a week.
He has had the week off this time and that might have freshened him up. Talking of freshening up, MVG is taking this weekend off and not playing in the Euro Tour event in Munich. He has admitted to getting bored with PL. He isn’t a fan of the format, but he has to play.
Dobey To Repeat The Dose
Van Gerwen will be looking for revenge, Dobey looking for something of a repeat. MVG has not impressed in his opening match for the last two weeks, but he is playing better and more consistently than Dobey who is blowing hot and cold.
Their H2H record is 13-3 to MVG but so far in this PL, Dobey is 2-1, and Dobey has won three of their last five matches. Van Gerwen might have half his mind on his holiday while Dobey will be encouraged by his recent wins over his long-time nemesis. Van Gerwen is the 1.33 favourite and Dobey 3.60. It is likely to be a good value loser, but Dobey is the value pick.

Nathan Aspinall vs. Jonny Clayton
Aspinall is a bit of a conundrum. He has lost five of his last ten matches but has hit five ton plus averages in those ten. All his averages have been over 92 and eight over 94, so he is not playing badly, but he is struggling to win back-to-back and he just looks too easily frustrated. He is making it hard on himself.
Jonny Clayton won last week, finally getting his PL campaign under way, but he remains hard to call. He has won six of his last ten matches but blew hot and cold on the Euro Tour last weekend, reaching the quarter final but only his win over Chizzy was impressive. His record against Aspinall is 5-4 with one draw. The Ferret has won their last three, including a 6-4 in this PL. Aspinall has not beaten Clayton since 2020 and his last two wins where in the remote Home Tour during lockdown.
Ferret A Narrow Fav
Jonny Clayton is the 1.80 favourite with Aspinall 2.00. It does look like a bit of a coin toss. Aspinall has won seven of his nine quarter final matches so far, Clayton just four, but one was against Aspinall. It was a poor match with both players missing a heap of doubles, 16 from Clayton, 23 from The Asp. Surely, they can’t be that bad again?
The temptation is to go for an over 9.5 leg bet, but at 1.91 the value is marginal.
2023 Night 10 Premier League Tip: No Bet
Dimitri van den Bergh vs. Gerwyn Price
Dancing Dimitri is not in great form, losing five of his last ten matches and four of his last five. In the PL he has lost three of his last four matches. His checkout percentage has been sub 30 in four of his last five matches and against Price he will need to be able to take any chances he gets to have any chance to win.
Gerwyn Price is in excellent form and has lost just one of his last fifteen matches. Nobody is playing better than the Iceman. His scoring is great, his doubling very consistent and it is hard to find fault with his game right now. He was slow to get going, but this year is his best PL performance ever and he looks a real threat, not just for the league stage, but the whole thing.
Their H2H record is 12-5 to Price. He has won their two matches in this PL so far, both 6-4, and in 2023 Price is 3-0. His run of great form can’t go on indefinitely, but he is hard to oppose right now and Van den Bergh hard to fancy.
Price is the 1.40 favourite to win, Dimitri 3.15. I’ll take Price to cover the handicap.

Peter Wright vs. Michael Smith
Two players who are not in great form, Wright particularly so. His 2023 win rate is just 47% and in the PL, he has played ten and lost nine. Overall, he has lost seven of his last ten, but an optimist might say that he has won two of his last three.
Yes, he won two matches on the Euro Tour, including a 96 average when beating Jose Justicia, coming from 0-2 down. That was his highest average since mid-February. A sign of a comeback? Well, he averaged just 84.4 in his next match and was lucky to find that Alan Soutar was even worse, before he lost 0-6 to MVG. Hardly a sign of a comeback.
Stale Bully Boy
Michael Smith looks a bit stale. He has played a lot of darts and probably could do with a rest. The problem with the PL is that you don’t get any weeks off. Smith has lost six of his last ten matches, but he is still scoring well in the main with eight of his last ten match averages being over 94, which should be enough to win this. He is still third in the table and was runner up last week having lost back-to-back against Chris Dobey in weeks 7&8.
Their overall H2H record is 29-15 to Wright. Smith won their only match in this year’s PL 6-5 in week 4, Dublin. Smith is the 1.54 favourite and Wright 2.85.
Wright Hard To Fancy
It is impossible to back Wright given his form, but Smith is not at his best either. I suspect Wright will get a few legs on the board and that can cause Smith’s head to drop, but can Wright keep it up to win five or six legs? Probably not. He started well against Price last week but collapsed quite quickly. Wright has lost three of his last six PL quarter final matches 5-6 (and won one 6-5).
Six of Smith’s nine quarter final matches have seen less than nine legs played and something similar is possible. His only match with a deciding leg was his 6-5 win against Wright. I’ll take a chance that a jaded Smith might require another decider.
