2024 Musselburgh & Curragh Sunday Preview

Just one place to show for our efforts on Saturday but at least it was our 14/1 NB Donny Boy. As for the rest? The writing was on the wall for Son as soon as Pricewise put him up and he got done on the nod for a place. Elvis Mail made an early mistake and never recovered and Revich was ridden as though he has another target in mind. It was simply one of those days. We go again this afternoon, 2024 Musselburgh & Curragh Sunday tips are below.

4.30 Curragh – Sprint Handicap (4yo+)

Mickey The Steel is bound to bounce back at some point and with Robert Whearty taking off a valuable 5lbs, hopefully it is today. Whearty has had two previous rides for Joe Murray resulting in a win and a third. It’ll be his first time aboard this fella today but he isn’t a complicated ride so there should be no issues.

The handicapper has relented somewhat and Murray’s charge is now down to a mark of 88. It’s a pound lower than he was when winning over C&D last November and with Whearty’s claim, he’s effectively off 83, the same mark he won off under Billy Lee at Navan in October 2022.

He shaped ok here on his seasonal bow off 91 but last time, he disappointed. However, he wore blinkers that day and today, the cheekpieces he’s worn for all four wins are back on. Heavy ground is ideal, hopefully he can rediscover his mojo at odds of 14/1.

2024 Musselburgh & Curragh Sunday Tip: Mickey The Steel e/w @ 14/1 (4 places) nap

4.45 Musselburgh – Skybet Match5 Handicap (Class 5)

With Oisin Orr booked, Flylikeaneagle could go well for Lucinda Rusell at a nice e/w price. This 7yo son of Free Eagle races off a rating of 69 today. That means he is a pound lower than when hacking up over this C&D (under Orr) in April of last year.

His form nosedived after he got a 6lb rise for that win but he bounced back to form with a fine effort at Newcastle after a 118 day break, beat a neck off 72. He’s been freshened up again after a trio of poor efforts subsequent to that close 2nd and he’s won off the back of a similar break in the past.

His three starts at Musselburgh over 8f/9f have yielded two wins and he is 2/4 when running on good to soft ground. Oisin Orr did us a turn when riding Pretty Crystal to victory at Newmarket in midweek, hopefully he can do us another one on Flylikeaneagle at odds of 12/1.

2024 Musselburgh & Curragh Sunday Tip: Flylikeaneagle e/w @ 12/1 (4 places) NB

5.00 Curragh – Business Plus Handicap (45-75)

I napped Redshore City here last month but he ended up being a non-runner. He disappointed at Dundalk a week later but these conditions will suit better and he could be dangerous. However, he’s a short enough price this time and instead, I am giving Tall Story one last chance.

Ross O’Sullivan’s charge is becoming a bit of a cliff horse for me. I’ve backed him the last twice and while those two runs returned form figures of 00, they weren’t as bad as the result might suggest. He was only beaten 6L behind Global Energy here (8f hvy) on his seasonal return off 49 and he ran another ok race when finishing 10th of 20 at Leopardstown (8f hvy) off the same mark two weeks ago.

Ross O’Sullivan’s son of Clodovil is in off 47 today and Mikey Sheehy retains the ride. He was on board at this meeting last season when Tall Story was beat 1.75L over this C&D on heavy off 57.

His best form is at the Curragh and this will be his first run at 6f since that excellent effort last season. Is he one for maximum stakes? Certainly not, but at odds of 40/1 I think it is worth rolling the dice on him one more time.

2024 Musselburgh & Curragh Sunday Tip: Tall Story e/w @ 40/1 (6 places)
