Check out James Punt’s 2026 Canadian GP Sprint Race preview below. We narrowly missed out on a nice winner in Sprint Qualifying, hopefully we make amends.
2026 Canadian GP Sprint Race
Sprint Qualifying saw our one and only bet lose by 0.045 seconds. Hulkenberg pipped to the last place in Q3 by Carlos Sainz, the last man on track to set a time. Frustrating.
George Russell will start the Sprint race form pole position and the upgraded Mercedes looks a cut above the rest. Russell was 0.315 faster than the nearest non-Mercedes car, the McLaren of Norris. Norris was very pleased with his lap but said he may have left a bit of time out there (0.158 was the estimate), but that he was never going to match the Mercedes.
The pecking order looked pretty well established. We have the two Mercedes 1-2, the two McLarens 3-4, the two Ferraris 5-6 and the two Red Bulls 7-8. The two Audis were 11-12 and the two Haas 14-15.
Russell won the Chinese Sprint race from pole and in Miami, Norris also won from pole. The two threats facing Russell would appear to be another bad start, and his teammate who was just 0.068 behind him. Antonelli has been afflicted with worse starts, so we shall wait and see.
Starting Issues
Russell said that the team are addressing their starting problem, but he didn’t sound that positive, saying it would take time. The run into the first corner here is not that long, and the fastest starters, the Ferraris, are back on the third row. The McLarens have been quicker than the Mercedes off the line, so we can’t rule out a McLaren taking the lead. But could they hold it for 23 laps against a faster car?
Maybe with clean air as an advantage and with the following cars not wanting to take any real risks before the GP qualifying session, but it would be hard.
Russell is the 1.67 favourite to win and I am happy to sit back and watch how they get on with the race start, rather than take an odds on bet.
Norris is a 12.00 shot, which is a sporting price, if the Mercedes are still struggling off the line. Worth a minimum level of interest? OK.
2026 Canadian GP Sprint Race Tip: 0.5 point Lando Norris to win the Sprint race @ 12.00 generally available
One hunch bet for this session is for a red flag. There were more red flags than a Chinese Communist Party rally on Friday. With this being a pseudo street circuit, there is not a lot of room to safely remove any broken down or crashed car, without stopping the traffic. It is just another minimum bet, but the odds are attractive.

That will do for now. Back with a brief update for GP qualifying later.
