2026 Hungarian GP Qualifying

The Hungaroring has thrown up a very competitive looking battle for pole position. Short laps leave no room for errors and the winning margin in qualifying around this track has been under 0.10 seconds for the last four years (and in five of the last seven).

Lando Norris was the fastest in FP3 by 0.117 from Hamilton. Antonelli was +0.129, Leclerc +0.352 and Piastri +0.499.

Norris has not qualified better than 3rd in 2026, but he has an upgraded car this weekend. Antonelli has had six pole positions and only twice off the front row. Ferrari have had a car on the front row in three of the last four race, but no poles yet.

Antonelli sat out FP1 and didn’t get a clear run in FP2. Today’s FP3 saw him in 3rd place and very much on the pace, albeit with the car looking a bit of a handful.

Four-Way Battle

It looks like we have a four-way fight this afternoon. The two Ferraris are in the hunt. Hamilton has been faster than Leclerc in FP2 & FP3 and he has been on pole position no less than nine times in Hungary. Leclerc was the fastest qualifier last year, but we must remember that Hamilton was a basket case 12 months ago.

Norris was on pole here in 2024 and was fastest in FP3 today but he doesn’t have a car advantage, judging by Piastri’s times this weekend. The Ferrari is well suited to this track and they have been fastest in two of the three timed sessions, and second in the other.

The likes of Russell, Piastri and Verstappen have been well off the pace so far. Red Bull look to have taken a backwards step overnight, McLaren have improved but Piastri was still near half a second off his teammate.

Hamilton Fav

Hamilton is the 3.50 favourite, Antonelli 4.33, Leclerc 4.50 and Norris 4.75. Interesting odds. I wasn’t expecting to see Antonelli at 4.33 given his record in qualifying in 2026, but for once the Mercedes has not been fastest in a FP3 session. They have had every pole in 2026 but they have been fastest in every FP3 session so is that a sign that they can be beaten today, or is 4.33 about another Antonelli pole the bet of the season?

If the FP3 winner to pole winner link continues, Norris would land the 4.75. If Antonelli keeps the Mercedes monopoly of poles in 2026, he lands 4.33. If the greatest qualifier of all time in Hungary gets pole number 10, he lands 3.50. And then there is Leclerc who is in the mix at 4.50.

Ferrari have been closing the gap to Mercedes in recent weeks and this is a track that plays to their cars’ strengths. But it also suits McLaren as well. It is a head scratcher. I will have a go with Hamilton, but it is likely to be very close. The last four qualifying sessions here have seen a winning margin of less than 0.10 and Hamilton beat Verstappen by 0.003 seconds in 2023.

Match Bets

The qualifying H2H record between the two Haas drivers in 2026 is 8-2 to Bearman. He had to sit out FP1 to make way for a test driver. He has been slower than Ocon in FP2 and FP3, but only by 0.017 in FP3. The drivers that sat out FP1 have been on the back foot and on a quirky track like this, you need to find a good rhythm and track time helps. Now he has had two full sessions, Bearman should be up to speed.
