Euro 2020 Matchday 13 Previews and Tips
It is all to play for in both Group E and Group F on Euro 2020 Matchday 13. In Group E, Sweden are top with 4 points and no matter what happens, they’ll be in the last 16 draw. If they lose they could finish 3rd but they’ll still qualify. Slovakia will qualify with a win or a draw if Sweden don’t lose vs Poland. Spain need to beat Slovakia to be sure of qualification. A draw would be enough for 3rd if Poland fail to beat Sweden. Poland will qualify in 2nd if they win and the other game doesn’t finish level.
In Group F, France are already through but any of the other three teams could still qualify. A win for France would see them through as Group F winners. Germany and Portugal need to win to be sure of qualification. Hungary can finish 2nd if they win and Portugal lose. If they win and the other games is a draw, they’ll finish 3rd. Simple right?! Find out what we think will happen in our match previews below.
Sweden v Poland
Match Odds: Sweden 19/10; Draw 23/10; Poland 8/5.
Venue: St Petersburg, Russia.
Kick Off Time: 5.00 pm.
Sweden have surprised me at Euro 2020. I thought their ageing squad would struggle but so far, they have proved me wrong. They put in a heroic defensive display in their opener in hot and humid Sevilla. That 0-0 draw vs Spain was followed by a 1-0 win vs Slovakia and they sit on top of the group. Poland were awful in their opener vs Slovakia and they were fortunate to get a point vs Spain. They are still in with a chance of qualifying and only a win will do.
Isak A Real Talent
Real Sociedad striker Alexander Isak has emerged as a real star for Sweden at this tournament. The 21 year old hasn’t scored but he has proved a real handful for opposing defences. His ability to retain possession and beat a man has been hugely beneficial for his team. Larsson and Forsberg have both worked hard in midfield and Lindelof has looked rock solid at the back. For Poland, Lewandowski scored in the 1-1 draw vs Spain but apart from that, he has been very disappointing. Moder and Bednarek are injury doubts for this game and they would be sorely missed.
Poland’s sole win in their last nine matches came against Andorra. They came into Euro 2020 struggling for form and that theme has continued. Sweden’s only defeat in their last nine was vs France and they have won six of their last seven. They are not the type of team to win by 3 or 4 goals but more often than not, they get the job done. They haven’t yet conceded a goal at this tournament and I expect that to be the case again on Wednesday. With Isak in top form, they can wrap up top spot with a victory and another clean sheet. Back Sweden to win to nil at odds of 7/2.
Euro 2020 Matchday 13 Tip: Sweden to win to nil @ 7/2
Euro 2020 Matchday 13: Slovakia v Spain
Match Odds: Slovakia 16/1; Draw 6/1; Spain 2/11.
Venue: Sevilla, Spain.
Kick Off Time: 5.00 pm.
There is huge pressure on Spain coming into this massive Group E clash with Slovakia. Lose, and they are out. A draw would see them finish 3rd, but only if Poland fail to win. They would definitely advance if they took all 3 points. However, they have been dreadful so far, drawing with Poland (1-1) and Sweden (0-0). Slovakia know a win would see them qualify for the last 16. Even a draw would do, once Sweden manage to avoid defeat vs Poland.
Both managers have full squads to choose from. Luis Enrique persisted with Morata up front against Poland and while he scored a goal, he still looked well short on confidence. Moreno was the scapegoat after he missed a penalty and he was taken off soon after. He could drop yo the bench on Wednesday evening. Slovakia were very impressive in the first half v Poland but their decision to play for a draw vs Sweden backfired. They’ll need to show a lot more ambition tonight, but that could leave them open defensively.
Spain On The Brink
Could the unthinkable happen here? Spain are on the brink of an early exit and they haven’t exactly looked like a side that is on the verge of hitting top form. They are unbeaten in their last ten (W4 D6) but they have wasted so many chances in their first two matches and playing at home has looked more of a hindrance than a help. The Slovaks had lost just 1 from 9 before that 1-0 reversal v Sweden last time.
The longer this game goes on without a goal, the nervier Spain will become. They have looked good in the build-up but their final ball and finishing has let them down. Added to that, they are far from watertight at the back and they are vulnerable to quick counter-attacks when they turn the ball over. Slovakia will drop deep, defend in numbers and then Hamsik will look to try and release Mak or Duda on the break. I think Spain could be vulnerable here and I am going to back Slovakia and the draw at 4/1 in the double chance market.
Euro 2020 Matchday 13 Tip: Slovakia/Draw Double Chance @ 4/1
Portugal v France
Match Odds: Portugal 29/10; Draw 2/1; France 5/4.
Venue: Budapest, Hungary.
Kick Off Time: 8.00 pm.
France only drew 1-1 with Hungary last time but thanks to their opening 1-0 victory vs Germany, they are through no matter what happens tonight. The only uncertain thing is their finishing position but if they win, they’ll qualify as Group winners. Portugal’s fate is in their own hands. They were outclassed by Germany but their 3-0 win vs Hungary means they can qualify with a win. If they lose and Hungary beat Germany, the reigning champions will be on the next flight home.
France have not found their best form yet at Euro 2020. They have shown flashes but they were fortunate to escape with a point vs Germany after a poor second-half display and Hungary looked like they wanted it more in their 1-1 draw. Portugal were flattered by the scoreline in their 3-0 win vs the Hungarians and the Germans were far too good for them last time. Ronaldo has still managed to score three goals but Bruno, Jota and Silva went missing in Munich.
I think this match has draw written all over it. France have already qualified so they won’t be hugely motivated to try and win the game. Portugal know a draw would be enough for them to qualify as one of the four best third placed teams, regardless of the result of the other game tonight. With the calibre of attacking players on the pitch I can’t see it being goalless, so back the draw and both teams to score at odds of 7/2.
Euro 2020 Matchday 13 Tip: Draw/both teams to score @ 7/2
Euro 2020 Matchday 13: Germany v Hungary
Match Odds: Germany 1/5; Draw 7/1; Hungary 17/1.
Venue: Munich, Germany.
Kick Off Time: 8.00 pm.
Germany know that a victory against Hungary will see them qualify as either group winners or runners up, depending on results elsewhere. They bounced back from an opening 1-0 defeat vs France to pick Portugal apart with a 4-2 win. Even a 1-0 loss will see them qualify as one of the top third placed teams if Portugal get a result vs France. Hungary kept their slim hopes alive by holding on for a famous 1-1 draw vs France last time. They put in a herculean effort in the 3-0 defeat vs Portugal, conceding 3 goals in the last 5 minutes.
The Germans will have to cope without influential attacker Thomas Mueller on Wednesday night. He has injured his knee and his uncanny ability to find space in the final third will be missed. Hungary could also be without their talismanic captain Adam Szalai. He went off with a head injury vs France and Nemanja Nikolics will lead the line if he doesn’t make it.
Can Hungary get the win they need to make the last 16? It looks an impossible task, especially if Szalai is sidelined. They are a well organised and well drilled team and a lot depends on whether we get the wasteful version of Germany we saw vs France or the clinical version we saw vs Portugal. I can see Hungary holding out for 65/70 minutes but the pressure should eventually tell. Back the draw halftime and Germany to win at fulltime at odds of 33/10 on the Betfair Exchange.
