Euro 2020 Preview and Betting Tips

Thanks to the Covid crisis Euro 2020 will actually be held in 2021. The new format sees 24 teams (increased from 16) in six groups of four with the top two in each group and the four best third placed teams advancing to the knockout stages. All the big boys have qualified and France and England are fighting it out for favouritism at the head of the outright winner market. The TXMarkets bumper Euro 2020 preview features a group by group guide and some betting tips that will hopefully earn you a few quid during the tournament. First up, we’ll take a look at Group A.

Leonardo Bonucci

Wales

200/1

Gareth Bale

The bookies’ favoruites for Group A are Italy. Since Roberto Mancini took over they have been making good progress and they look near nailed on to qualify as group winners. With talent like Chiellini, Bonucci, Verrati and Jorginho in their ranks they will be a force to be reckoned with at Euro 2020. The other three teams look to be fighting it out for second spot and I think Turkey could be the ones to grab the final automatic qualifying place.

The Turks are a team on the up and they have some promising players in their squad. Premier League fans will be familiar with Soyuncu and Under at Leicester, Calhanoglu is a key man for AC Milan and the old stager Burak Yilmaz is enjoying an Indian summer in Ligue 1 with Lille. Switzerland often flatter to deceive at major tournaments and they will likely battle it out with Wales for 3rd. If Gareth Bale can continue in the same vein in which he finished the Premier League season, the Welsh might just edge it.

Belgium

13/2

Kevin De Bruyne

Russia

125/1

Aleksandr Golovin

It looks like Group B should be pretty straightforward for Belgium. The World No.1s are among the favourites to win the tournament outright and it would be a huge shock if they didn’t finish top. The biggest concern for the Belgians is the injury sustained by star man Kevin De Bruyne in the Champions League Final. He suffered a broken nose and orbital bone and he won’t be ready for their opener. The form of Eden Hazard is another major worry and if Belgium are going to go all the way, they’ll need him to rediscover his mojo.

Denmark will be expecting to finish 2nd ahead of Russia and debutants Finland. The Danes have plenty of experience in their ranks with the likes of Schmiechel, Vestergaard and Kjaer in defence and Hojbjerg and Eriksen in midfield. One thing they lack is a top class striker but they should have enough quality elsewhere to finish 2nd. Russia are massive outsiders in the outright market but they did enjoy a decent run at the last World Cup. On paper their squad is much stronger than Finland’s and they could pose the biggest threat to Denmark.

Star Man

Memphis Depay

Ukraine

125/1

Andriy Yarmolenko

Austria

200/1

David Alaba

North Macedonia

500/1

Aleksandar Trajkovski

The draw has been pretty kind to the Netherlands. They will fancy their chances of wrapping up qualification after two matches and that could enable Frank De Boer to rest players for the knockout stages. The Dutch have a strong squad with plenty of experience and no shortage of talent. Memphis Depay has emerged as a key attacking threat for them and if they are going to go deep at Euro 2020, he will play a central role.

Debutants North Macedonia did brilliantly to qualify but they may be out of their depth in this Group. Ukraine and Austria will most likely fight it out for second place and I narrowly favour the Ukrainians. Austria will be relying heavily on Alaba but Ukraine can call upon Zinchenko, Yarmolenko and dead ball expert Malinovsky. I think Ukraine can nick second and Austria will have to hope they sneak through as one of the best third placed teams.

Luka Modric

Scotland

250/1

Andy Robertson

Czech Republic

150/1

Tomas Soucek

I think this is one of the trickiest Groups at Euro 2020. England are viewed by many as the favourites to win the tournament outright. They have an embarrassment of top class young attacking talent, the question is whether Southgate can find the right formula. They might find it tough to top this group, especially if Harry Maguire isn’t fully fit.

Croatia knocked England out of the last World Cup and they will fancy their chances of getting at least a draw against Gareth Southgate’s side. They have struggled since reaching the World Cup Final three years ago but tournament football often brings the best out of the Croats. Those two should fill the first two positions in the group with Scotland fighting it out with the Czechs for 3rd.

Scotland have really improved under Steve Clarke. They managed to get here via the playoffs, beating Serbia on penalties. Andy Robertson, Kieran Tierney and Scott McTominay will be pivotal for the Scots and they will be targeting the England and Czech matches. That game vs the Czechs could ultimately decide who gets third place in the group. The Czechs will be looking to the West Ham duo Soucek and Coufal for inspiration and if those two produce the goods, they could cause problems. However, I think this Scotland team is capabable of finishing third.

Star Man

Spain

Sergio Busquets

Sweden

100/1

Robin Quaison

Poland

80/1

Robert Lewandowski

Slovakia

500/1

Marek Hamsik

It is probably just as well for Spain that they are in one of the easiest groups at Euro 2020. They are no longer the dominant force they once were and they are struggling to find young talent. They’ll be relying on grizzled veterans Thiago and Busquets in midfield and the erratic Alvaro Morata up top. Spain have enough about them to qualify for the knockout stages but it is tough to see them going all the way.

The rest of the teams will all fancy their chances of taking second spot. Sweden are an ageing side with 9 outfield players in their squad over the age of 30. Slovakia will rely heavily on their star man Marek Hamsik and he remains a top class operator despite his advancing years.

However, Poland could be the ones to chase Spain home in this group. They have one of the best strikers in the business in Lewandowski and Milik is capable of contributing goals too. The Slovakians are narrowly favoured to edge out Sweden for 3rd.

Group F

Team

Outright Odds

Star Man

Hungary

500/1

Adam Szalai

Portugal

10/1

Cristiano Ronaldo

France

5/1

Kyllian Mbappe

Germany

9/1

Kai Havertz

There is a Group Of Death at every tournament and at Euro 2020, it is Group F. Hungary look nailed on for last place but one of the giants of European football is going to miss out on an automatic qualifying spot. France are the tournament favourites and it is hard to pick holes in their squad. They have a strong spine with Varane and Kante and they possess one of the most lethal strikers in the world in Kylian Mbappe.

Portugal are the reigning Champions but they are not the force they once were. Ronaldo isn’t getting any younger and the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva have struggled to reproduce their club form at International level. The emergence of Diogo Jota is a plus (6 goals in 12 starts) and Ruben Dias has developed into a top class defender. They will be dangerous opponents but it is hard to see them reproducing their 2016 heroics.

It is always foolish to write off Germany at any major tournament. However, their recent results have not been inspiring. They lost 2-1 at home to North Macedonia in their last World Cup Qualifier and they were hammered 6-0 by Spain in the Nations League. Joachim Lowe is leaving his post after this tournament finishes and it feels like this is a team in transition. They do have plenty of quality players but they may have to settle for sneaking through as one of the four best 3rd placed teams.

Euro 2020 Recommended Bets – Outright Winner

The bookies reckon the most likely winners of Euro 2020 will be France, England or Belgium and it is hard to disagree given the talent that those three teams have at their disposal. England could be the most vulnerable of the trio. Gareth Southgate’s conservative style is a worry and so is their lack of a top quality goalkeeper. Belgium have flattered to deceive at past tournaments but France usually produce the goods and they look by far like the most likely winners.

Italy are an intriguing team. They have improved bundles under Mancini and they haven’t lost a match in almost three years. However, the lack of a world class goalscorer may prove their undoing. The Netherlands should go deep too but they might come up short in the semis. Ultimately, it is impossible to get away from the claims of France. Their squad is stuffed with World class talent and Didier Deschamps knows how to get the best out of his players. They were runners up at Euro 2016, they won the World Cup in 2018 and at odds of 5/1, they are worth backing to win Euro 2020.

Euro 2020 Outright winner tip: France @ 5/1

Top Goalscorer

There are three key things to consider when betting on the top goalscorer. Firstly, has their team got a chance of going deep. Secondly, are they facing any whipping boys in the Group stages and finally, is the player you are considering backing the designated penalty/free kick taker?

The two teams most likely to ship the most goals in the group stages look like being Hungary and Finland and that bodes well for the chances of Mbappe, Griezmann, Ronaldo and Gnabry in Group F (Hungary) and Lukaku in Group B.

Kylian Mbappe is the obvious one but susprisingly, he isn’t the favourite. Harry Kane is the current market leader and he won the Golden Boot at the 2018 World Cup. However, England don’t have the easiest of groups and they aren’t the type of team that usually bangs in lots of goals.

With 6 places on offer from Betfair’s Sportsbook, a small each way interest on Memphis Depay at 16/1 could be the way to go. The Dutch should come through their group quite comfortably and it wouldn’t be a surprise if they made it to at least the semis. Depay takes the penalties for the Netherlands and he is capable of scoring free kicks too. He bagged a brace against Scotland last week  so he is in good form. At odds of 16/1, he is worth backing each way.

Euro 2020 Top Goalscorer Tip: Memphis Depay e/w @ 16/1 (6 places Betfair Sportsbook)

Euro 2020 Preview: Other Bets

One bet that stood out was in the Group D winner market. England are long odds on to top the group at odds of 4/11. However, I think that the Croatians might be worth backing at 7/2. Yes, they haven’t had the greatest of spells since 2018 but they have been blooding new talent.

Luka Modric remains one of the finest midfielders in Europe, their defence is solid and Perisic is capable of scoring goals at this level. They won’t be fazed by facing England and they’ll fancy their chances vs the Czechs and Scotland. The England vs Scotland ‘derby’ could be a tricky tie for Southgate’s side and at the prices, Croatia are surely worth a small investment.
