2022 Glorious Goodwood Friday Tips and Preview – DS
2022 Glorious Goodwood Friday Preview
We had to make do with just one place on Thursday. Aristia ran a blinder at 40s, finishing 2nd. However, none of the other horses managed to land a blow. Schmilsson flattered to deceive, the Johnson Houghton 2yo disappointed, as did Masekela and Centre Court. Hopefully we get some more decent runs for our money on Day 4. 2022 Glorious Goodwood Friday tips are below.
1.50 – Goodwood Handicap (Class 2)
A very tricky start to the day with this 20.5f handicap. The good Dr Richard Newland is best known for landing big NH handicaps but he has a lively outsider here in the shape of Baasem. Formerly trained by Owen Burrows, this horse returned from a year and a half off with a fine run over timber at Aintree (16f gd). He just got a bit outpaced in that race, shaping as though further would suit.
That was often the case when he was with Owen Burrows. He faded after making the running on easy ground on his last three starts for him but his last two runs on better ground offer hope that today’s stamina test will prove ideal. Back in July 2020 Baasem pitched up at Ascot in a decent 14f handicap. He was shuffled back through the field early and it seemed to suit him more than making the pace.
As they turned for home the first two shot clear but Baasem did manage to stay on stoutly to finish best of the rest in 3rd. He wasn’t doing anything quickly, he just looked like he was going better the further he went. He finished 6L behind the winner off a mark of 90 and he returns to the flat for his new yard off a 10lb lower mark. Luke Morris is 2/13 with 5 places when riding for Newland, hopefully he enhances that decent frame hitting strike rate on Friday. At odds of 25/1, Baasem is the each way selection.
2022 Glorious Goodwood Friday Tips: Baasem e/w @ 25/1 (5 places)
2.25 – Thoroughbred Stakes (Group 3)
Just the seven runners in this Group 3. With only two places on offer for e/w players, a race I am happy to leave alone. No bet.
2022 Glorious Goodwood Friday Tips: No Bet
3.00 – Golden Mile Handicap (Class 2)
20 runners and there will definitely be more than a few hard luck stories. Orbaan is a horse that is no strange to tales of hardship. He is a horse that must be ridden cold and that can often result in traffic problems. This time Silvestre De Sousa has been tasked with threading the eye of the needle and Orbaan races off a mark of 87 (1lb wrong).
As he has shown on three of his last four starts, this son of Invincible Spirit is more than capable of winning off that rating. Even his last run at Royal Ascot was pretty decent (beat 3.25L). Orbaan actually ran in this race last season. Jamie Spencer rode in his usual quiet style and as is often the case, traffic issues ensued. O’Meara’s charge did run a cracker though, staying on for 6th once he found daylight.
He was beat 6.25L off a mark of 101 on that occasion. He is now almost a stone lower so surely if he gets the gaps he can go close. De Sousa has won twice on him before in France and he got re-acquainted with the horse at Ascot. If things drop right, Orbaan is more than capable of winning this at odds of 33/1.
2022 Glorious Goodwood Friday Tips: Orbaan e/w @ 33/1 (6 places) NB
3.35 – King George Stakes (Group 2)
If Mitbaahy is a 4/1 shot here, Vertiginous should not be 50/1. Brian Meehan’s charge has been put in as the rank outsider here, presumably because of her below par comeback. The daughter of Oasis Dream trailed in last of 10 in a Haydock G2 (6f gd) but she is a horse with a lot more ability than that run suggests.
Last season she landed a Listed contest at Ayr (5f gd/fm) on her penultimate start of the campaign. She hacked up, comfortably putting Mitbaahy in her place by 2L. Then, on her final run of 2021 she ran a huge race at the Breeders’ Cup, beat just 1.25L for the win over 5f on firm.
Fast ground is key for this speedster and if she gets away well, she’ll surely go hell for leather for home. Sean Levey (9/80 with 30 Top 4s for Meehan) rides and I think it is too soon to write this horse off. At odds of 50/1, Vertiginous is the e/w selection.
2022 Glorious Goodwood Friday Tips: Vertiginous e/w @ 50/1
4.10 – Queen’s Plate Glorious Stakes (Group 3)
Once all eight run, Desert Encounter is the e/w bet here. This horse is now a 10yo but I thought he shaped a lot better than the eventual distance he was beat last time at Newbury. He usually needs his comeback run anyway and hopefully he’ll strip a lot fitter now. A rating of 105 does leave him with a bit to find with the principals but I think he is capable of running to around 110 at this track.
This son of Halling loves it at Goodwood. He has run here four times and the furthest he has been beaten is 3.25L. His form figures read 2122 at Goodwood and his two runs in this race saw him win and then finish 0.75L 2nd. On his penultimate outing last year, he ran a huge race in a G1 at Woodbine, chasing home the 115 rated Walton Street. If he could repeat that here, surely he has place claims at odds of 20/1.
