2020 Goodwood Day 4 Tips For Live ITV Races

Thursday was an absolute disaster with none of our selections reaching the money. Celtic Art wasn’t far off placing but he was denied a clear run. Talbot’s woes at the stalls continued and his race was over once he fell out of them. Khalifa Sat ran a brave sort of race but Mogul finally came good and had too much class. Study The Stars got badly hampered early on and never recovered. We are due a change of luck, hopefully it comes tomorrow. Check out Dave Stevos’ 2020 Goodwood Day 4 Tips below…

Day 4 Goodwood Selections: 1.45pm – Oak Tree Stakes (Group 3)

The action kicks off on the fourth day of Glorious Goodwood with a Group 3 for fillies and mares. One Master is the market leader at around 13/8 and she is the clear form pick. However, of her 5 career wins only one came on good ground so drying conditions have to be a slight concern. She has lots of placed form on quicker ground though so she should be fine.

One that could go well at a bigger price is the French raider Wasmya. James Doyle takes the ride on this daughter of Toronado and she needs to bounce back from a poor effort at Ascot last time. However, her trainer says she had a poor journey over from France so I am putting a line through that run.

She beat a very decent Mark Prescott filly in Germany last year in a Listed heat by nearly 4L and that is the only chance she has had over 7f on good ground. James Doyle is 8/34 when riding for Al Shaqab Racing and Wasmya has a very nice draw in stall 2. She is a better filly than she showed last time and at odds of 20/1 she is the e/w pick.

2020 Goodwood Day 4 Tips: 2.15pm – Bonham Thoroughbred Stakes (Group 3)

This is an intriguing little race that is very hard to weigh up form wise. Only 5 go to post and Khaloosy is odds on to follow up on his commanding Ascot handicap win. That came by 4.5L off 94 and earned the son of Dubawi a rating of 111. However, his two previous wins came on the all-weather and the Ascot win was on soft and this is very different ground today.

My Oberon is also by Dubawi and he is proven on good ground. He built on a promising Newbury debut when hosing up by 6L in a class 5 novice at York. It was a visually impressive display but this will be a whole lot harder. Tilsit is by First Defence and he bolted up last time at Newcastle (8f st). He beat a modest field by 18L but the horse he was a head behind on debut was beat off 88 in a handicap here yesterday (Al Salt). He’ll need to improve to win this.

That leaves Mystery Power and Repartee. Both of those horses will relish the quick ground but Repartee has more to prove after bombing out last time. Mystery Power shaped really well on ground softer than ideal at Newbury and he finished in front of a fine yardstick in Ropey Guest. In my view that is among the best form on offer and the quicker the ground is at Goodwood, the better his chance will be. At odds of 18/1 Mystery Power is the each way pick.

ITV Live Selections: 2.45pm – Golden Mile Handicap (Class 2)

Baltic Baron enjoyed a luckless passage in this from stall 6 last season off 97. Trained by David O’Meara, this horse has knocked on the door in a few valuable handicaps in the past couple of seasons. He tends to be slow from the gates but that shouldn’t be an issue here. The 5yo is drawn 13 and he will be dropped in so a slightly slow start won’t inconvenience him too much. He has to bounce back from a poor run at York last time but that was at 10f.

This son of Shamardal has run all his best races at a mile and it is hard to believe he has just 1 win to his name after 20 starts. It is probably because he is often a hostage to fortune due to his racing style. He deserves to get his head in front in one of these races and Jason Watson takes over in the plate. Danny Tudhope rode at Ascot but 8st 9lbs is too light a weight for him to do. Hopefully Watson can thread a passage through from the back and if he does, Baltic Baron could go very close at odds of 20/1.

2020 Goodwood Day 4 Tips: 3.15pm – King George Stakes (Group 2)

Battaash has looked faster than ever this season. The best sprinter in Europe attempts to win this race for the 4th time in a row and the first two occasions he won here will live long in the memory. Last year’s performance wasn’t quite as good but he still got the job done by 0.75L from Houtzen. Liberty Beach is a filly I really like and I think she is very talented when on her game. She was only 2L behind Battaash at Ascot and she travelled like the winner that day.

That was on good to soft and while this daughter of Liberty Beach has won on that ground, her best form has come on quicker ground. A’Ali franked the form of her Sandown 2nd (which was disappointing at the time) by beating a very good horse in Make A Challenge at the Curragh. John Quinn’s filly won here last season and she was really impressive. Clearly, Battaash is the most likely winner but he can throw in the odd below par performance and if he does, Liberty Beach could be the one to take advantage.

ITV Live Selections: Goodwood 3.45pm – Glorious Stakes (Group 3)

Another small field closes the show at Goodwood with just 7 lining up in this 12f Group 3. The market has it between Desert Encounter and Communique and it is hard to disagree. Desert Encounter won this last year and shaped as though returning to form on unsuitably soft ground last time out. He was a Group 1 winner in Woodbine at this trip last season, beating Alounak into 2nd. If it was softer ground Alounak may have turned the form around here, but on a quicker surface Desert Encounter can uphold the form.

Mark Johnston’s charges can never be discounted at Goodwood and Communique has course winning form. He ran a cracker behind Eagles By Day last time at York (14f) and dropping back to 12f won’t cause him too many problems. Pablo Escobar will love the conditions at Goodwood too and he is another former course winner.

However, the one that could surprise with a big run at a price is La Don De Vie. Trained by Hughie Morrison, this horse ran a blinder when we backed him at Ascot. The ground was soft that day, as it was last time when he ran well at Haydock but today’s ground should suit better. Oisin Murphy is 2/4 on him and won on him on good here in a hcap off 96 last year. That was a small field, just like it is today and at odds of 16/1 Le Don De Vie could put it up to the market leaders.
