Chelsea v Tottenham Preview

Gabriel Martinelli did everything apart from score against Liverpool. The Gunners were well beaten in the end but their Brazilian winger had a fine game. We stay in London for this weekend’s preview and the match of the gameweek is Chelsea v Tottenham. Tuchel’s Blues have stuttered badly in recent weeks whereas Conte’s Spurs are building momentum. The bookies make the hosts the 1.77 favs, the draw is 4.00 and the away win is chalked up at 5.00. Hopefully we can find some value, check out our big match preview below.

Chelsea

The mood at Stamford Bridge seems to be darkening with every passing day. The early season Premier League pace setters are now 13 points behind Man City and they have dropped to 3rd. They have a 7 point gap to West Ham in 4th but Spurs are only 8 points behind Chelsea and they have four games in hand. Thoughts have now turned from winning the title to maintaining their place in the Top 4.

The reason for their decline is clear. They simply aren’t winning enough games. In the EPL they have won just one of their last seven, including draws against Everton, Brighton x2 and Wolves. At home they have drawn five of their last six, their only win during that spell coming vs Leeds. Yes, they did beat Spurs quite comfortably over two legs in the EFL Cup earlier this month but they haven’t replicated that form in the League.

Lukaku isn’t doing enough up front and Ziyech looked like his dog had just died after he scored against Brighton in midweek. Timo Werner looks like his legs turn to jelly when he gets a sight of goal and his German compatriot Havertz has contributed just two goals and one assist in the Premier League this season. Only for Mason Mount’s seven goals and five assists, Chelsea would be even worse off. They’ll be without Chilwell, James and Mendy on Sunday while Christensen and Chalobah are doubts.

Tottenham

Things are most certainly looking up for Antonio Conte and Spurs right now. They are a different proposition under the inspirational Italian and they have yet to taste defeat in nine EPL matches since he took the reins. Tottenham have climbed up the table somewhat under the radar and if they win their games in hand, they’ll leapfrog Chelsea and they’ll only be three points behind Liverpool. Their dreams of finishing in the Top 4 are very much alive.

Spurs’ only losses under Conte came vs Chelsea in the Carabao Cup and Rennes in Europe. In the Premier League they are unbeaten with three draws and six wins. A last gasp Bergwijn brace earned them a 3-2 win at Leicester four days ago and the manner of that victory will give them huge confidence. They were by far the better team on the night and to lose would have been sickening. That made it two away wins in a row in the EPL and they’ll fancy their chances of making it three on Sunday.

Harry Kane is slowly starting to click into top form and he has scored four in his last five games. Lucas Moura has looked dangerous with his pace and ability to beat a man. Skipp and Hojbjerg have stabilised the midfield and even with Son out, Spurs have been effective in the final third. They are still conceding goals, which is a worry, but they have at least managed to keep two clean sheets in their last four away EPL matches. Conte would give his right arm for another one at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea v Tottenham Possible Lineups

Chelsea: Kepa, Alonso, Azpilicueta, Thiago Silva, Rudiger, Sarr, Kante, Jorginho, Mount, Ziyech, Lukaku.

Tottenham: Lloris, Doherty, Sanchez, Davies, Dier, Reguilon, Skipp, Hojbjerg, Moura, Bergwijn, Kane.

Chelsea v Tottenham Betting Tip

At the prices, surely Spurs are worth backing to get the win. They’ll be brimful of confidence after their dramatic win at Leicester and they have that all important momentum. Things are turning sour for Tuchel at Stamford Bridge and the players don’t look like they are enjoying their football. That has been reflected in their recent results and 5.00 about the Tottenham victory is too tempting to turn down.
