Euro 2020 Matchday 9 Previews and Tips

We were out of luck on Matchday 8. Slovakia had a decent first half but they tried to settle for the draw and they paid the price eventually. Scotland were magnificent vs England and got a 0-0 draw. I was hoping Scott McTominay would be playing in midfield but he played as one of three centre backs and he stayed disciplined. Hopefully we can get back on track on Euro 2020 Matchday 9, check out our previews and betting tips below.

Hungary v France

Match Odds: Hungary 12/1; Draw 17/4; France 1/4.

Venue: Budapest, Hungary.

Kick Off Time: 2.00 pm.

The opening match on Matchday 9 is a Group F showdown between France and Hungary. The Hungarians have home advantage but they didn’t make it count in their rather unfortunate 3-0 loss to Portugal. France silenced the crowd when winning their opening game in Germany 1-0 and they will be looking to win this match and overtake Portugal at the top of the table.

The 3-0 scoreline in Hungary’s game vs Portugal doesn’t reflect how the game went. Hungary defended really well in the first half and after halftime they had a proper go and caused the Portuguese a few problems. It took Portugal until the 84th minute to score with a lucky deflection and then Ronaldo added another two. France beat Germany 1-0 but they barely deserved it. They showed brief flashes, especially Pogba and Mbappe, but in the second half Germany dominated and they arguably deserved a draw.

It is impossible to oppose France here. They are strongly fancied to go all the way by some experts and their squad is chock full of talent. Hungary will try and do what they did vs France. They’ll defend in numbers in the first half and then they’ll try to put some pressure on the French in the second half. However, it is hard to see them holding out for 90 minutes. I am going to make a play in the halftime/fulltime market and Draw/France to win is the recommended bet.

Euro 2020 Matchday 9 Tip: Draw Halftime/France Fulltime @ 3/1

Euro 2020 Matchday 9: Portugal v Germany

Match Odds: Portugal 23/10; Draw 12/5; Germany 13/10.

Venue: Munich, Germany.

Kick Off Time: 5.00 pm.

The glamour tie on Saturday is Portugal vs Germany. The Germans are under big pressure after their 1-0 defeat vs France. They’ll have home advantage again here and they’ll be eager to please their fans. If they lose, they’ll face a showdown with Hungary for 3rd spot so the pressure is on. Portugal struggled to break down Hungary in Budapest but a late three goal flurry saw them come away with all three points.

I wasn’t very impressed by Portugal vs Hungary. They huffed and puffed but they created very little when you consider the talent in their squad. The final scoreline of 3-0 definitely flattered them. Germany were unlucky to lose vs France. A Hummels own goal was the difference between the teams but in the second half especially, Germany were dominant and they deserved the draw.

The bookies make Germany favourites here and I agree with their view. They played well vs France and Portugal made very hard work of it vs Hungary. Bruno Fernandes and Jota were well below par and they’ll need to find their best form if Portugal are to go on to defend their crown. I think Germany can win a match that should hopefully produce goals so back Germany/both teams to score at odds of 15/4.

Euro 2020 Matchday 9 Tip: Germany/both teams to score @ 15/4

Spain v Poland

Match Odds: Spain 1/3; Draw 4/1; Poland 9/1.

Venue: Sevilla, Spain.

Kick Off Time: 8.00 pm.

Neither of these teams lived up to expectations in their first games at Euro 2020. Spain took on Sweden and they couldn’t find the back of the net in a game that finished 0-0. Poland were expected to beat Slovakia quite comfortably but they were awful and Krychowiak was sent off in that surprise 2-1 defeat. This is now a game that Poland cannot afford to lose whereas a point wouldn’t be the worst result for Spain after Slovakia’s loss yesterday.

In that opener vs Sweden, Spain had the lion’s share of possession. They created a couple of clear cut chances but wasted them. Alvaro Morata missed an absolute sitter in the first half and surely Gerard Moreno deserves to start up front ahead of him. Robert Lewandowski had a very quiet game against Slovakia and when he doesn’t play well, Poland usually don’t either. They’ll be without the suspended Krychowiak too and this could be a tough night for them in the heat in Seville.

This Spanish team are no world-beaters but surely they will have too much quality for Poland tonight. Poland looked well out of sorts vs Slovakia and they desperately need Lewandowski to find his best form. Sweden created a couple of decent chances vs Spain, despite their limited possession, and the Spaniards don’t look watertight at the back. However, Luis Enrique has enough attacking talent at his disposal to get the job done tonight and surely they can’t be as wasteful as they were against the Swedes. Back Spain to win and both teams to score at odds of 5/2.

Euro 2020 Matchday 9 Tip: Spain/both teams to score @ 5/2
