Night 6 Premier League Darts Preview

MVG got the job done again on night 5, landing his second successive title of the season. He also won the German Darts Championship last weekend. Is he going to make it four in a row or will someone else steal the spotlight. Check out James Punt’s Night 6 Premier League darts tips and preview below.

Michael Smith vs. James Wade

James Wade holds a commanding 17-5 H2H record against Michael Smith, but Smith won their most recent match, a 6-3 win in the World Championship semi-final. Smith has played his way back into the League after being winless in the first three weeks. He is now on 5 points, just 2 points behind the play off places. With Gerwyn Price and Peter Wright both not fit, I get the feeling that things could change in the next week or two.

Unbeaten In PL

Wade has won six of his last ten matches and has never been beaten by Smith in the three previous matches in the Premier League. Smith has won seven of his last ten as was runner up in last weeks final. It was a strange night for Smith, he was poor when beating Anderson and Price but averaged 100.6 when losing 4-6 to MVG. His form at the German Darts Championship was equally inconsistent. Smith averaged 108.3 when beating Dave Chisnall, but only 86.1 when losing in the next round to Dimitri van den Bergh.

It is fair to say that backing Smith remains high risk but opposing him isn’t straight forward. Six of his last ten matches have seen averages of 93 or below and more of that and Wade can improve on his impressive H2H record over Smith. Wade, on the other hand, has been playing some very un-James Wade like matches. His seasonal average is 94, his game doesn’t produce very high averages as his strength is finishing, and often with the last dart in hand. However, in his last ten matches he has hit six averages of 97+.

Sometimes it is the odds which make the decision. Wade looks the logical call and he is the outsider at 2.63.

Michael van Gerwen vs. Gerwyn Price

MVG finally won a proper title at the weekend, beating Rob Cross 8-5 in the final of the German Darts Championship. That and winning the last two PL nights means that his has got his confidence back and is a tougher proposition for it. He has also drawn Price at just the right time.

Gerwyn Price lost the quarter final of the UK Open to Michael Smith and then withdrew from last week’s PL citing a hand injury. The same injury kept him out of the German Darts Championship at the weekend, but he confirmed that he will play tonight, despite not being 100%. Their H2H record is 23-6 to MVG but in their last 10 it is 5-5. They last met in the PL a month ago in Belfast and Price won a thriller, 6-5. Price was unplayable that night, hitting two nine darters and picking up 5 points.

We have an MVG with renewed confidence and Price playing with a hand injury. We don’t know what Price’s specific problem is and how much it will affect his form, but it is hardly an incentive to back him.

Gary Anderson vs. Jonny Clayton

Gary Anderson has lost his last five PL matches in a row and overall has won just two of his last ten matches. His motivation for playing in another 11 eleven nights of Premier League action must be near zero. Travelling around the British Isles and over to Rotterdam while propping up the table will not float his boat. Anderson has a 10-4 record against Clayton, but The Ferret has won the last three, all last year.

Jonny Clayton has been struggling for form for a few weeks now, he has lost five of his last ten matches but there were signs that he is on the way back at the weekend. He lost in the quarter final of the euro tour event but averaged 99.9 in a 5-6 loss to Daryl Gurney. Jonny also played well against Suljovic and Waites. His B game is still pretty good and there were signs of his A game making a reappearance.

Joe Cullen vs. Peter Wright

Joe Cullen picked up a 6-0 win without throwing a dart last week when Gerwyn Price pulled out. He then lost 1-6 to MVG. He has lost six of his last ten matches and his form is all over the place. Cullen’s H2H record against Wright is 5-21 and their last ten, 2-8.

With a H2H record like that, this should be a two point pick up for Wright, but it isn’t that simple. Wright is another one who has been bringing a sick note to school. He withdrew from his quarter final match in Germany at the weekend. He was in too much pain to play and flew home for treatment. Snakebite has won six of his last ten and is still banging in ton plus averages, so I have no idea how he is going to play, or indeed, if he will play at all. If he doesn’t, Cullen gets another 6-0 ‘win’, which makes a mockery of the league.

Wright’s health problems mean it just has to be a no bet in any match he plays at the moment.
