Premier League Final Day Preview and Tips

So, after 37 rounds of fixtures it comes down to this. It is safe to say this has been a Premier League season like no other. A lack of fans meant home form went out the window and teams involved in Europe were subjected to a relentless schedule. With relegation and top spot already decided, the only things up for grabs on Sunday are the final two top four spots and the battle to avoid, sorry qualify for, the Europa League. Chelsea, Liverpool and Leicester are the three teams involved in the Champions League battle. West Ham and Spurs will fight it out for 6th. Who will be celebrating at the end of the day, and who will be bitterly disappointed? Find out in our Premier League final day preview below.

Aston Villa v Chelsea

Things are pretty straightforward for Chelsea on Sunday. They know that a win would guarantee them 3rd spot and Champions League football next season. Anything else and they will need other results to go their way. Aston Villa have had a very respectable season themselves, especially when you consider they were missing star midfielder Jack Grealish for a crucial stage of their campaign.

Like a lot of teams, Villa have struggled at home this season. Since their 7-2 win vs Liverpool they have won just 4 of their 16 matches at Villa Park. Chelsea, on the other hand, are unbeaten away from home in the EPL since losing 2-0 at Leicester back in January (W6 D2). The big worry for Chelsea is that Kante may miss out after limping off in midweek.

The Villains dealt a blow to Tottenham’s late push for European football with a 2-1 win during the week. Chelsea ended a two-game losing run by beating Leicester 2-1. I don’t think this will be easy for Tuchel’s Blues and he will need to ensure that complacency doesn’t become an issue. With Kante missing and Grealish back fit, the draw and both teams to score is the recommended bet.

Leicester City v Tottenham

This is the only match on the final day where both teams have something to play for. Leicester landed the FA Cup last weekend but their top 4 hopes were dealt a massive blow at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night. Leicester were lucky to be just 2-0 down after around 65 minutes and they were completely outplayed until Iheanacho pulled one back. They put pressure on Chelsea in the closing stages but it wasn’t enough and they fell to a 2-1 defeat, dropping out of the top 4 in the process.

Spurs need to win this to give themselves a chance of Europa League football next season. They were rocked by the news that talisman Harry Kane wants out during the week and that seemed to affect their performance in their 2-1 home loss to Villa. Spurs without Kane would be like Chas without Dave or Hale without Pace and if he does leave, they will have a massive hole to fill in their team next season.

Leicester have form for faltering on the final day. They had their destiny in their own hands last season but they fell to a 2-0 defeat vs Man Utd and they dropped out of the Top 4. However, they are up against a Spurs side that is in disarray and rookie manager Ryan Mason might struggle to rally the troops. The Foxes beat Spurs 2-0 in London earlier this season and a repeat could be on the cards on Sunday. Leicester to win to nil is the recommended bet and if Chelsea slip up, that will be enough to nick 4th.

Premier League Final Day: Liverpool vs Crystal Palace

A couple of weeks ago it looked like Liverpool would struggle to make it into the Top 4. However, they have managed to pull it out of the fire and their destiny is now in their own hands. Jurgen Klopp’s men know that all they need to do on Sunday is win. Once they do that, they don’t have to worry about what any of the rest of the teams do. They survived a couple of hairy moments to eventually beat Burnley 3-0 on Wednesday and what they wouldn’t give for a repeat of that this weekend.

Crystal Palace have nothing to play for, bar pride. News broke during the week that Roy Hodgson would be stepping down at the end of the season and that could well motivate the players to perform well in his final match in charge. However, it didn’t make much difference for their final home game, which they lost 3-1 to Arsenal. They have an ever-growing injury list too with Eze and Benteke the latest to visit the treatment table.

Liverpool’s 8 game winless run at home is what has them in this precarious position. They lost 6 on the bounce during that spell but they have now won 2 of their last 3 at Anfield. They just need one more win to get over the line and after the season they have had, getting Top 4 will almost feel as good as winning the title. It is very hard to see them slipping up now and while they may concede, they should be able to get the win they need. Back Liverpool to win and both teams to score at 7/4.

West Ham vs Southampton

Like Liverpool, West Ham’s task is simple. A single point would be enough for them to lock up 6th spot and secure Europa League football next season. David Moyes has done a fabulous job and they will strongly fancy their chances of getting the job done vs struggling Southampton on Sunday. Up until the last two games vs Chelsea and Everton, their home form had been pretty good. Prior to those two losses, they had won 4/5 on their own patch. They should be more than capable of getting the point they crave on Sunday.

Ralph Hassenhuttl’s side have been wildly inconsistent all season. They were lucky they made such a decent start because since their 1-0 win vs Liverpool, their form has fallen off a cliff. Since that match on January 4th they have amassed a record of W4 D2 L14. Southampton will need to strengthen considerably during the summer or else they could be involved in a relegation dogfight next season.

It is hard to see West Ham messing this up now. They only need a draw on Sunday and they showed they have the stomach for the fight by battling back from 1-0 down to beat West Brom 3-1 in midweek. Lingard, Antonio, Benrahma and Soucek are all capable of creating and scoring goals and Southampton have conceded 65 this season, the worst record in the EPL. The Hammers can get the job done in style, back them -1 at odds of 15/8 with Paddy Power.

Premier League Final Day Tip: West Ham -1 @ 15/8 Paddy Power
