RWC Quarter Final Tips and Preview

I think it is safe to say our Rugby World Cup tips during the pool stages were a disaster. We had a couple of near misses but winners were hard to come by. The pre-tournament predictions of heavy defeats for the minnows didn’t really materialise. Now the tournament enters the knockout stages and there are some mouth-watering matches. All the big guns are still standing and the hosts Japan made it through too. Check out our RWC Quarter Final Tips and previews for Saturday’s games below…

First up on Saturday is a meeting of two rugby giants, England and Australia. There is no love lost between Eddie Jones and Michael Cheika and the same could be said about their teams. England will be fresher as their final pool game was cancelled. The Aussies have had 6 days less to prepare, but they still had 8 days to recover from their bruising win vs Georgia. We fancied Australia as potential dark horses before the tournament started but they have not impressed.

They looked laboured against Fiji, lost to Wales and they struggled to put Georgia away. On that evidence they will struggle to beat England. Eddie Jones’ men dominate the recent head to head stats too. They have played The Wallabies six times since they last met in the World Cup in 2015 and won every match. However, the Aussies destroyed England when they met in the World Cup 4 years ago and they showed flashes of their ability vs Wales. If they can put a proper performance together for 80 minutes, they may surprise a few people. Australia +8 represents decent value as this could be a tight match.

When Ireland beat Scotland in their opening game the Irish media rejoiced that they would face South Africa rather than New Zealand in the quarter finals. Japan soon put paid to that and now Ireland must beat the All Blacks to end their 1/4 final hoodoo. Ireland have managed two relatively recent wins against New Zealand, including one in November 2018. Joe Schmidt’s team know they can beat the All Blacks, but can they do it at a World Cup?

Ireland bullied Scotland into submission up front but they really struggled to contain expansive Japan. New Zealand love to play off the cuff rugby, just like the Japanese, and that could spell trouble for a one dimensional Irish side. The Irish starting line up is a conservative one and Kearney is back in the side instead of the exciting Larmour. This was viewed as the World Cup where Ireland would finally end their quarter final hoodoo. However, the drought looks set to continue against an in-form New Zealand side. The All Blacks to win by between 1-12 points at 15/8 is the recommended bet.
