Saturday Evening Austrian Darts Open Tips

After a slow start to the day James Punt finished strongly with a total of three winners. The action continues this evening and James has been busy preparing another preview. Check out his Saturday evening Austrian Darts Open tips below.

James Wade vs. Brett Claydon

James Wade, fresh from winning the Premier League Night 12 and hitting his highest ever televised average along the way, is the 1.15 favourite to win this match. Claydon beat a very poor local qualifier 6-5 last night, averaging just 79.15. He has won six of his last ten, but he is not a heavy scorer, averaging just 89.4 in 2022. They have met twice with Wade winning both, 6-0 and 6-2. I expect something similar.

Saturday Evening Austrian Darts Open Tip: 0.5 point James Wade to win 6-0 @ 10.00 with Ladbrokes, Boylesports

Luke Humphries vs. Danny Jansen

Three titles between these two in 2022, one players championship each and Humphries won the German Darts Grand Prix a fortnight ago.

Danny Jansen beat Radoslaw Szaganski 6-1 and averaged 101. That is the kind of thing he can do, but he doesn’t do it as often as Luke Humphries, who is just about the finished article now.

Cool Hand Luke is averaging 97.3 in 2022 with a 73% win rate. Jansen, 90.2 and 63%. Jansen has only had a tour card since January and not the finished article. He is talented and not shy. He has won five of his last ten matches and like all the new, young players coming up, he lacks consistency.

Humphries is the 1.30 favourite, Jansen 3.50. It is hard to oppose Humphries, but Jansen might give him more of a match than the bookies think.

Saturday Evening Austrian Darts Open Tip: 1 point over 9.5 legs @ 2.20 generally available

Dirk van Duijvenbode vs. Rowby-John Rodriguez

The Austrian crowd are not shy of getting behind their own players, so Dirk will be up against it here. Rodriguez beat Darius Labanauskas 6-3 last night. It wasn’t a classic and Labanauskas didn’t play well, but it will have settled Rodriguez. He has a 5-3 H2H record over Dirk but it is pretty old form and Van Duijvenbode has won three of their last four. Rodriguez has won seven of his last ten matches and is averaging 92.5 in 2022.

Dirk van Duijvenbode has won eight of his last ten and won PC12. However, on the Euro Tour he has played six and lost three, yet to progress beyond the third round in 2022. He can be a bit of a slow starter and he can’t afford to miss chances with a hostile crowd on his back.

Van Duijvenbode tops the 180s per leg table and has done for some time. So long as he settles, he looks reasonable value to get the most in this game.

Saturday Evening Austrian Darts Open Tip: 1 point Dirk van Duijvenbode to have the most 180’s @ 1.73 with Boylesports

Michael van Gerwen vs. Cameron Menzies

The H2H stats says 1-1 with Menzies beating MVG 6-4 back in February. The Scotsman beat Steve Beaton 6-4 last night with a decent performance. He reached the semi-final of the WDF World Championship three weeks ago and has won six of his last ten matches.

MVG remains the highest averaging player on tour and his average in 2022 is 98.8. However, he is finding winning hard. He has lost five of his last ten and the last time we saw him on the Euro Tour he was thrashed 0-7 by Luke Humphries. He has hit eight ton plus averages in his last ten matches and still lost five, but I’d be surprised if Menzies has enough resist anything over a ton.

MVG is the 1.20 favourite, Menzies 4.50. MVG can’t be trusted at those odds but it’s hard to see Menzies doing him on stage. No bet.

Saturday Evening Austrian Darts Open Tip: No Bet

Jonny Clayton vs. Jeffery de Zwaan

The Swan overcame Mensur Suljovic, and more importantly, the home crowd, to win 6-5 last night. It wasn’t a great quality match but a big win for De Zwaan.

Jonny Clayton just keeps on playing well, winning plenty of matches without picking up any titles in 2022. He has won seven of his last ten and he is very hard to beat.

These two haven’t met since 2020 but Clayton has a 6-3 H2H record against the Dutchman, and the two of their careers have headed in opposite directions since their last meeting. Clayton is the 1.25 favourite, and he should justify those odds with something in hand.

Saturday Evening Austrian Darts Open Tip: 1 point Clayton to win -2.5 legs @ 1.80 with SpreadEx, Ladbrokes

Peter Wright vs. Callan Rydz

This could be good. Peter Wright continues to lose plenty of matches, six of his last seven, and his confidence must be low. He is still scoring well most of the time but finding winning hard. He has a 5-1 H2H record against Rydz, but it was Rydz who won their only Euro Tour match in Gibraltar last September. After that they had a great World Championship match which Wright won 5-4 in the quarter final.

Rydz won his first round match 6-0 yesterday, averaging 98 and it was a very convincing effort. He looks like he has his A game with him and that makes him a very dangerous opponent.

Saturday Evening Austrian Darts Open Tip: 1 point Callan Rydz to win @ 2.75 with Boylesports

Rob Cross vs. Josh Rock

Cross is up against it here. Josh Rock is one of, if not the most exciting young players coming up. His last eight matches have seen him average 100, 90, 97, 112, 105, 94 and 101. Yesterday’s 6-3 win over Devon Petersen saw that 101 average, despite him missing 14 darts at doubles.

Where Cross does have the big advantage is in terms of experience. Rock has only had his card since January, and he is serving his apprenticeship. This is his first Euro Tour event, and his stage experience is yesterday’s match and losing his opening match at the UK Open. Cross is a former World Champion and multiple major winner. He is also averaging more than Rock in 2022.

Precocious talent vs. massive experience, which will triumph? Hopefully both players can show us their best game as that would make for a great match, but I suspect that Cross will cope better with a big crowd in the hall. Rob Cross will be able to take advantage better than Petersen if Rock has more double trouble.

Saturday Evening Austrian Darts Open Tip: 1 point Rob Cross to win -1.5 legs @ 1.95 with Boylesports

Ross Smith vs. Stephen Bunting

Smudger got a result when Gerwyn Price withdrew as he was made the 16th seed and he picks up £2000 even if he loses this. Smith is not having a good 2022. His win rate is just 40% and his seasonal average has dropped 5 points to just 89.6. He has lost five of his last ten and in his last six, he has only averaged over 90 once, and that was 92.6. He is a confidence player and very backable when he is running hot, but he’s hard to fancy here.

Bunting has a 6-3 H2H record over Smith but Smith did knock Bunting out of this year’s World Championship. Bunting’s win rate in 2022 is an impressive 67% and he has won six of his last ten. He isn’t at the top of his game but he is playing better than Smith.

Bunting is the 1.60 favourite, but I’ll take him on the handicap.

Saturday Evening Austrian Darts Open Tip: 1 point Bunting to win -1.5 @ 2.00 with Ladbrokes
