Sunday Newmarket Guineas Meeting Tips and Preview

We had a decent day on Saturday at Newmarket. Apollo One ran a grand race but he just missed out on place money by a head. Cap Francais overcame trouble in running to win at 22/1. Zarzyni had to switch at an inopportune moment but he nicked 4th and place money. Royal Patronage didn’t get home and Berkshire Shadow just missed out on a place at 80s. We are back in action on 1000 Guineas Day, check out Dave Stevos’ Sunday Newmarket Guineas meeting tips and preview below.

1.50 Newmarket – Betfair Heritage Handicap (Class 2)

The opening live race of the day on ITV is this 14f handicap. It looks a pretty open contest and the most obvious contenders haven’t been missed by the bookies. One that could possibly go well at a bigger price is Blow Your Horn. Trained by Charlie Fellowes , this son of Golden Horn has won just 2 of his 13 starts. Both those wins have come on artificial surfaces, including one over today’s distance of 14f. That came off a mark of 83 back in May of last year and he is in off just 2lbs higher today.

He hasn’t had a huge amount of chances on turf but he did run really well in a 12f Doncaster handicap on good ground last March. So, he has at least run well on grass once before. He was only beat 4L into 4th at Salisbury on his final run last term (14f gd) off 88. If he could repeat that off 3lbs lower, he can surely challenge for place money.

Blow Your Horn didn’t run that well on his return behind a few of these at Musselburgh. However, I don’t think the ease in the ground was to his liking and he should strip much fitter now. The form of Charlie Fellowes is a slight worry but he has had a few places in the last fortnight so he isn’t completely out of kilter. Stevie Donohue is 6/28 with 14 top 4s for this owner. Hopefully he improves that record at odds of 25/1 on Blow Your Horn.

2.25 Newmarket – Pretty Polly Stakes (Listed)

Just seven go to post in this Listed contest, frustratingly for e/w backers. Even so, I think Arion could still be worth taking a chance on at around 11/1. Trained by in form Hugo Palmer, yesterday’s 2000 Guineas winning jockey James Doyle will ride. This 3yo daughter of Dubawi already has course form in the book over 7f. She ran a cracker behind Bermuda, shaping as though further would suit.

She was kept to 7f on her second start, in another Novice at Chelmsford. This time she put her experience to good use to score by over 1L from a subsequent maiden winner. She now takes a big step up in trip to 10f and on breeding, that should suit her. Her half-sister won at 10f and her dam, a full sister to Derby winner Australia, won at 14f. She most certainly has a black type pedigree, hopefully she can pick some up on Sunday. At odds of 11/1, Arion is the each way selection.

3.00 Newmarket – Dahlia Stakes (Group 2)

Another disappointing turnout of just 7 for this valuable Group 2. A trip of 9f awaits them and at absolutely huge odds, maybe Romantic Rival can surprise with a big run. Formerly trained in France by H-A Pantall, this filly was bought for 110k at the sales in December. She is an extremely well bred daughter of Shamardal, she is out of a full sister to G 1winner Aesop’s Fables and her Grand-dam is a close relative of Lammtarra.

You would imagine George Boughey’s mission with this filly is to get black type for breeding purposes. She made her UK debut in a Listed heat at Kempton two weeks ago and while she finished last of 7, she was only beaten by 4L. It wasn’t a bad effort at all and she should be well suited by the return to good ground. She won over 9f on her last start in France on that type of ground and her official rating of 85 might underestimate her. She has a race fitness advantage over all but one of her rivals too and with a few bookies paying 3 places, a small e/w interest is advised at 50/1.

3.40 Newmarket – 1000 Guineas Stakes (Group 1)

The way things have been going this season, they should probably just give Charlie Appleby and Wild Beauty the race now. Appleby has made a sensational start to the season and I’m surprised this last time out G3 winner is as big as 16/1. She is already a G1 winner in Canada and she ran alright in the Fillies’ Mile behind a few of these here last season. The daughter of Frankel cannot be discounted.

However, the one I like e/w at a nice price is Mise En Scene. Trained by in form handler James Ferguson, this filly finished 4th in that Fillies’ Mile. She was only around 1L behind Prosperous Voyage and Cachet but they likely appreciated the ease in the ground more than Mise En Scene. Ferguson’s charge then headed to the USA for the Breeders’ Cup and while she could only finish 10th, she was only 4L behind the winner.

Prestige Winner

This filly landed her first two starts. First off she won a 7f maiden at Haydock in taking style. That form wasn’t a lot to write home about but her Prestige Stakes win at Goodwood (7f gd) has worked out well. She landed that G3 by a neck from Daneh with Prosperous Voyage and Hello You back in 3rd and 4th. She lost no caste in defeat in the Fillies’ Mile and you couldn’t hold that Breeders’ Cup effort against her either.

This filly ticks the pedigree box too. She is by Siyouni, a quality sire, and her Galileo dam is a half sister to former winner of this race, Speciosa. I think a mile is ideal for her at this point and reportedly she has done well over the Winter. James Ferguson is flying (4 winners last 10 runners) and with trip, track and ground to suit, Mise En Scene is the each way selection at 20/1.
