It was a mixed Day-1 of the Ebor Festival at York for us on Wednesday. Nayef Road ran a poor race for us in the Voltigeur and Mark Johnston continues to be a trainer that I can never work out. Maybe one day I’ll learn not to tip up his horses! Grand Cheval was outpaced but he did stay on well in the main event and he could run big back up in trip next time. Marnie James landed our e/w bets with an arguably unlucky 2nd in the opener. Ropey Guest again did his trainer proud with a fine run to grab 3rd in the Acomb. York Ebor Meeting Day-2 Tips: 1.55 Lowther Stakes (Group 2)
I am not usually one for tipping up favourites, but it is impossible to get away from Liberty Beach here. I’ve backed her every time she has run this season and she is unlucky not to be 5/5. The draw bias arguably cost her victory behind Raffle Prize at Royal Ascot and he ran a huge race in the Prix Morny on Sunday. John Quinn’s filly won impressively next time at Sandown (5f gd/fm) staying on powerfully to score by over 3L.
She followed that with a gutsy Group 3 win at Goodwood, showing real courage to overcome trouble in running (5f gd). Her running style hints that 6f at a track like York could be perfect and her pedigree suggests the trip should suit too. Her trainer’s decision to swerve the Morny was probably down to the soft ground. That may have blunted Liberty Beach’s electric turn of foot, but conditions should be ideal for her on Thursday. At 7/4 she should win. If you are looking for an each way alternative, Good Vibes could go well returned to better ground at 14/1.

York Preview Thursday: 2.25 – Goffs Premier Yearling Stakes (Class 2)
This valuable 2yo conditions race will see 22 fillies, colts and geldings go to post. Show Me Show Me ran a huge race for us in a similar race to this two starts back. He proved that was no fluke next time in a Group 3 at Goodwood and he is a worthy favourite. His mark of 101 is the highest in the field and carrying 9st 3lbs he should run a big race for in form Richard Fahey and the Ontoawinner Syndicate.
However, in a race like this 9/2 is short and with extra places on offer it might pay to chance one at a bigger price each way. Richard Hannon has a fine record in this and the bigger priced of his two runners could go well. Oisin Murphy, who rode Hannon’s other entry Mums Tipple to victory on debut, gets the leg up on Cheat. This three race maiden ran his best race yet last time and it is interesting that Murphy rides him instead of Mums Tipple.
Murphy has an excellent record when riding for Hannon with 11 wins, 18 top 4 finishes and over £220k prize money from just 54 rides. Cheat chased home a very useful sort at Salisbury and the return to a less testing 6f should suit. With a rating of 79 he has to improve but he easily could on just his 4th start and at 33/1 a small each way interest is advised (6 Places Skybet).

York Ebor Meeting Day-2: 3.00 – Handicap (Class 2)
This is a typically tricky big field 8f handicap and a case can be made for a host of them. At odds of 14/1 I am pretty sweet on Petrus for Brian Meehan and Martin Dwyer. This 4yo has always looked a horse with lots of ability. However, it took a while for Meehan to find the key to him and his 3yo career was a bit of a let down. Petrus was gelded in the off season and showed the benefits in the Spring Mile on his return to action in 2019.
He won that pretty comfortably off 91 and followed up in a valuable race at Bath off 6lb higher. Another 3lb rise didn’t stop him from running a great race at Newbury, beaten only 1.5L. Soft ground scuppered his chances at Ascot, but he returned to form last time at Sandown. He was just under 2L behind Mojito off 99 and he races off the same rating here. A truly run race will play to his strengths and his draw in 4 should be fine. At odds of 14/1, Petrus is the each way NAP of the day.

York Racing Preview: 3.35 – Yorkshire Oaks (Group 1)
The majority of those who travel to York tomorrow will be doing so for one reason. The Queen of racing, Enable, will be strutting her stuff on the Knavesmire in the 12f Yorkshire Oaks. She will be attempting to regain the crown she last wore in 2017 when she beat Coronet by 5L at 1/4. Frankie knows this magical mare inside out and they are a match made in heaven. While she only had a neck to spare over Crystal Ocean last time, one got the sense she was doing it a lot more comfortably than her rival.
Odds of 2/7 do not interest me in the slightest though and this is a race I won’t be having a bet on. If there is an upset, Magical is the most likely to cause it. She was less than a length behind Enable at Sandown (10f) (and at the Breeders’ Cup) and the return to 12f is a positive for her. If Enable is at her brilliant best, she wins. If for some reason she isn’t, Magical is the most obvious alternative. No bet, but it is a race that is well worth watching. We may not get to see Enable on the track many more times, so cherish every run.
