It is shaping up to be another losing weekend. Our three pointer is in trouble with Antonelli starting from third place and it is ten years since anyone outside of the front row has won here. He just hasn’t been on the pace all weekend. He says he has been overdriving the car, so maybe he can find a better rhythm over a race distance.

Both our qualifying bets lost and of the other ante post bets, Carlos Sainz starts from a lowly 16th place and it is a long way to get into the points from there. Gasly’s chances of top 6 are just about non-existent from 14th. Only Nico Hulkenberg to finish in the points is alive as he finally made Q3 in 2026 and starts 9th.

At least Barcelona is a good form school and we can learn from my mistakes. A poor car gets found out here and there are a few teams hurting. Sadly, I have backed two of them.

Mercedes

Another pole for Mercedes but no front row lockout. Antonelli starts third, but he just hasn’t fired at any point this weekend. Russell said that he went with his own judgment this weekend, rather than trying to follow Antonelli’s setups. Fastest in thee of the four timed sessions, but he will be under attack at the start of the race. If Antonelli is to land our bet, he might need Russell and Hamilton to trip over each other, which is not out of the question on this track.

Russell is a bit of a sitting duck at the start. The Ferrari is likely to blast past and Antonelli will be looking for a slipstream to make up a place. However, history tells us that pole position is the place to be at Barcelona. I was looking at Antonelli’s long run pace on Friday, and it was good. They won’t want to get stuck behind a Ferrari in the race, however, as the dirty, hot air is going to be a bit of a tyre killer.

Ferrari

Russell may have come out of his funk at Mercedes, but Leclerc is in free fall at Ferrari. He had looked nailed on for a second row start until crashing out in Q3 and he will start from 10th. Hamilton maybe should have nicked pole position, but he will be pushed very hard to keep in second place.

The run to the first corner is nearly 0.6 km and we will find out whether Ferrari still have an advantage off the line. Ultimately, the Mercedes will have the faster car and better tyre wear, so Russell needs to be patient.

Tyre wear is potentially a big problem for Ferrari. They have brought a lot of upgrades this weekend and even though Leclerc starts tenth, he was very positive about the car’s pace. He should make a great start and might even be in the hunt for a podium, or not far off it.

McLaren

A second row start for Norris, but Piastri dropped the ball in qualifying. He looked in great shape in free practice but could only manage a disappointing 7th in qualifying. What is most concerning for McLaren is that they are worried about tyre degradation.

Last weekend they were complaining about their car being too gentle on the tyres, not being able to get them warmed up and into the right window. Yesterday, Norris said that Mercedes is now the best car in terms of tyre temperature management. This race is going to be all about managing the tyres.

We have got used to talking about the power management side of things in 2026, but this race looks like an old-fashioned tyre management race. That would have been music to McLaren ears for the last two years, but not anymore. That is not to say they are going to shred their tyres but they won’t have an advantage.

Red Bull

Their two drivers were separated by just 0.056 seconds and start from 5th and 6th. That suggests that is as good as they could do. They are right on the pace of McLaren, so that will be a real scrap.

Verstappen used a set of hard tyres in FP1 and with a two stop race very likely, everyone else has kept their hards for race day. A rare mistake? He tried a three stop race here last year, and it didn’t quite work. He may have forced himself into the same strategy this year.

Maybe he can get lucky with a safety car, but it still doesn’t look good. However, Pirelli are saying that the hard tyre isn’t going to be a great race tyre. Too much sliding and the degradation rate isn’t much different between the compounds. That was borne out in the F2 race with winner doing a long first stint on the soft tyre and then nailing the run in on the medium.

Audi

Hulkenberg finally cracked the Q3 code and starts ninth, with Bortoleto in twelfth. Both are likely to lose places at the start and then spend the race trying to make them back up, which they just about do most of the time.

It will be a nail bitter for our points finish bet, and I do hope he doesn’t end up eleventh, again. The team are happy with their long run pace, but they can’t afford to drop too many places at the start.

Racing Bulls

Lawson starts just ahead of Hulkenberg and Lindblad just ahead of Bortoleto. The Racing Bulls are faster off the line and they should pass the two Audis. Lawson drove like a complete idiot here last year and he is a liability in the first corner complex.

Their race pace has generally been better than one lap pace, so a double points finish is on the cards, if Lawson can keep his head. Lindblad had a deployment problem in Q2 and reliability is a concern. Both cars also suffered with high degradation on their longs runs.

Alpine

Gasly has said that the car just won’t turn properly. The team even went as far as building up a new chassis for him on Friday night, but not with any great change to his performance. Both drivers are complaining about the car sliding in the corners and it going to be a long, hard race for both.

Haas

The usual poor qualifying performance, with Bearman 15th and Ocon 17th. On average they have made up 6.25 and 2.47 places respectively in the races, but Bearman was scathing about the car yesterday. ‘The worst car I have ever driven’. That hardly inspires confidence.

Bearman used three sets of tyre just to make it out of Q1. He was still hopeful about race pace however and expects the be much more competitive today.

Williams

Their run of good results looks to have hit the wall here. 16th for Sainz and 18th for Albon. Their race pace is generally a bit better than one lap pace, but the team are not sounding very optimistic. Sainz says points are possible, but only if there is a high rate of attrition.

Cadillac

Perez continues to lead the battle of the back markers, qualifying ahead of his teammate and the two Aston Martins. He said that the team have focused purely on race pace. I imagine they will try something like a one stop race. Just try an alternative strategy and hope for the best.

Aston Martin

Stroll out qualified Alonso! But was less than happy. Saying the car was s**t. He isn’t wrong. No power and no downforce.

2026 Barcelona-Catalunya GP Raceday Summary

Tyre degradation is said to be very high. The long fast corners stress the tyres and then add in the heat, which means high thermal degradation.

Pirelli have brought tyres that are a step softer than last year. That was largely a three stopper, due to a late safety car, but this might be a three stopper just because the tyres won’t last. However, as a rule of thumb, the tyres always seem to be more durable than expected. That wasn’t the case in the F2 race, however. It was an interesting race with various strategies in play, but getting the right strategy was the deciding factor.

Clea Air Key

Clean air will pay a big dividend in terms of keeping the car cool and the tyres in better shape. Can Lewis Hamilton take the lead and exploit that advantage?

The Ferrari is very quick off the line, it is very fast in the corners here, but they are still losing out on the straight. I suspect that the Mercedes pair will prevail, so long as they can get Hamilton behind them sooner rather than later. We are 3 points deep into Antonelli, just as he is having his worst weekend of the year, but he isn’t quite out of it yet.

Strategy is going to be the issue of the day. Maybe that is bad news for Ferrari? Some teams are going do a better job than others and of course if we get a safety car, then luck comes into it.

2026 Barcelona-Catalunya GP Raceday Selections

Leclerc should have been in the mix for pole position yesterday and the car, the updated car, is a lot quicker than his 10th on the grid suggests. He should make good progress, especially on lap one. The fast-starting Ferrari of Hamilton could very well be leading the race after the first lap.

2026 Barcelona-Catalunya GP Raceday Tip: 1 point Charles Leclerc to finish in the top 6 @ 1.83 with Ladbrokes

Group Betting

I want to have a go with Bearman today. Like Verstappen, Bearman used up a set of hard tyres but he believes that he is going to be better off using the soft and medium tyres. It sounds counter intuitive but Bearman says that in very hot conditions, he has found that the softer compounds perform better. The F2 race winner used the soft tyre for a long first stint and ended up winning very comfortably, so he may be onto something, and if Verstappen has done it……

Unibet have grouped Bearman with the two Alpines and Carlos Sainz. The Alpines are struggling with handling and the Williams has been exposed as a bad car on this track. Albon in the other Williams was nearly out qualified by Perez in the Cadillac. Nobody has made up more race places in 2026 than Bearman and he looks the value bet to win the group.

2026 Barcelona-Catalunya GP Raceday Tip: 1 point Oliver Bearman to win Group 4 @ 4.50 with Unibet

Fastest lap isn’t a market I play very often, but Antonelli is tempting me. He has score four fastest laps from the first six races (Norris and Verstappen got the rother two). The Mercedes still looks to be the fastest car and at 3.50 he makes enough appeal.
